I to have the M-34 Icom and have the same problem with receiving, I can hear others on there radios then mine will kick in, nice to know I am not alone with this problem :smt013. I will have to try Turing off the FF to see if this helps. I do not have any problems with the batteries it will last a vary long time :smt007. The radio perchance is for a friend of mine. Look’s like I may have to look into ether the Uniden Voyager or the Standard Horizon, would like to thank all of you for your comments it's always helpful to get a second opinion thanks again :smt006.

I haven't had a fishfinder for the last few weeks but have still had the same problem.

I have a Icom M72 no problems with it, great power and battery life. I think Otobepelagic and son had issues with the battery in theirs, not sure which model.

It was the floating model.

thaks Howard, that's right....I'll get in touch with them.

also, got the DVD today, thanks

Well I just purchased an Icom M88.

A bit pricey @ $206 (that's a good price though - MSRP is over 400, average retail I found was over 250).  I went this route because it can be programmed for HAM (amateur radio) frequencies also.  Since I'm working towards my license, this will functions as a dual purpose radio for me.

Sounds like most are happy with their Icom units, and Icom seams to be popular with the HAMs, so I took a chance and went for it...

Well I just purchased an Icom M88.

I've got the same and love it although at Mendo I did notice that there were times when I was missing calls.

What you might consider getting is the attachable mic that goes with it.  My radio stays in my PFD pocket and the mic attaches to a clip on my shoulder.  It is very convenient.

I saw the replies about some of the Icoms not comming off squelch quick enough.  I noticed in the documentation for the M88 (don't know if the other ones have this) there is an adjustable squelch.  Have you look into that for this issue?  I was hoping that's all it was.

For me, I've got the squelch set on my M34 as low as it possibly can go, but I'm still missing all or part of many calls. My wife is in the market for a new radio and I'm thinking we are going to buy her a Uniden or Standard Horizon.

Have you guys tried contacting Icom about this?  Maybe they are aware of it and have a fix?  Worth a try.

I use my IC-M34 for kayak fishing. The last time I was out with other kayakers,  I could hear their radios before mine would kick in, so I would miss some of the conversation.  I run my SQL on #1 most of the time and always start the day with a full charged battery. There are also about five others in the club with the same radio that have the same problem. Is this common for these radio or are we all doing something wrong?  Any suggestions or help would be helpful.

Thanks in advance

ICOM-M34.  I think I can attest to some of the same things as mentioned above but for the most part it's a kick ass radio.  Sometimes water gets stuck in the mic and you have to blow in it to get it out.  also about the pins in the back...they do get corrosion on them so you should always rinse the whole radio off after exposing it to salt and just keep an eye on the pins.  Good luck and tight lines.
