No, that's not how the bottom normally looks where there's easy access to the coast.  Usually the snails are gone and all you see are rocks and kelp.  That looks like a legendary mother lode of snails.

Do everyone a favor and keep that place a secret so free divers have something to dream about.  The video is friggin awesome and everyone should know that it takes a most excellent diver to be able to jet down to 30 - 40 fow and have good bottom time.

I've gone on tank dives in Stillwater North and Fort Ross and never saw anything close to the snail landscape that's on this video.  However, on SCUBA you can hang out and look at the schools of rf hovering in the kelp and see all the activity near the bottom.

Great report and awesome video!

Now I've got a hankering for fish stick chicken fingers of the sea. Thanks for the torture fellas. What month was the footage shot in? The vis looks a lot better than Salt Point's report of 4-6 ft.

FYI the reason stillwater cove doesn't look like that is because it never did. Not in the main cove anyway. I started diving at Stllwater in 1975 and there never was those kind of populations there. Now if you went around the corner to the big round rock to the south ,yed there was. Or out to the Cauldron then yes there also. In fact at Stillwater just south of the cove right up against the wall before the big round rock there is a cave well not really a cave more like a big room with no doors. You can see in but you cant get in there and the place is covered with abalone. All very safe from human hands. Also there are many , many spots in Sonoma County that look just like that and you dont need to go 40 ft. They are in 15ft or less. Believe me, Ive been there.

Nice ab porn. I gotta use up my tags before the end of the season.
I've always wanted to take videos of my brothers and I when we go diving but don't know what type of camera to pick up. Any suggestions? I typically dive no deeper than 30' due to ear problems from the past.

I don't really have that much experience with video or  photography.  The camera I used is a Nikon coolpix S6 with a Fantasea housing.  It works pretty good, but when taking pics, you need to hold REALLY still.  The image stabalization with that camera is not the best.   As for video, I have it set at the highest resolution and on auto-focus.  The constant focusing of the lens during the dive, really burns up the battery.  I only get about 13 minutes of video before it takes a dump on me.  That translates to about 8-10 dives.  I will probably have to remedy that before I head back to Baja.

I also have a camera that fits into one of those bullet proof Ikelite housings.  That thing is way too heavy and bulky for freediving though.

Nice video. I prefer not to go that deep, thanks. You guys mean it does not look like that everywhere you dive on the North Coast?   :smt002

I've seen abs stacked like that a couple of times. It was nice living on the Mendocino coast with all of the "special" access areas.

The vid is out of this world. Since no one has said it yet.....nice lungs!
