This Day Could have been Epic......

I got a late start taking the kids to school, waiting for Bay tackle to Open at 9 and out to Ferry Point,
OTW around 10,  Gorgeous  FAC.... :smt001

Start with my trusty Anchovy swim bait and Lose a Barley Keeper by the Boat,  things slow, try bobbing a Popsicle and Get slammed HARD!!! Comes Off.... Oh well... Hook up another Maybe Keeper, comes Off by the Boat.... Eh... :smt012

Wow... Look at Red Rock.... :smt003  Always wanted to fish around that, wind is non-exsistant, tide is Minimal, Go for it....

Side note,
I forgot my bag of tricks and basically am Down to Halibut Gear only and 1 hair raiser... :smt002

Get about half way there and Hear a Report on 68 of a Thresher taken around Angel Island...

Wow, that would be Kool, Keep Peddling and Notice more and More bait as I'm crossing the Channel in about 40 to 50 FOW...

Then I see a Familiar site... The water around me starts to come alive with bait, then i see nice sized Smelties jumping out of the water and Here he is ..

Thresher!!!!! about 8' long thrashing like crazy thru the Bait...

I lose it!!!! try to cast towards it, Hook myself... :smt010  Calm down and decide my best chance is to bait up a Anchovy and tow it around shallow... well, that was as exciting as that got, and kept on my pursuit of Red Rock after about a 1/2 hour of nothing and dead looking water,

Get to the Rock, very Kool, come around the west side and notice a small boat throwing a small swimbait.
I switch to my only bait that might do the trick , the hair raiser,

I notice he is hooking about every 4th cast, I'm getting hit but nothing will stick, He finally boards a 9lbder and we start talking. He is using a very small swimbait, see pic. I keep casting and hook up about a dozen times but, all come off, schoolie size.

He gives me a few baits and leaves for hali's and the Bite dies,
Interesting thing kept happening when I hit this one spot, depthfinder just goes nuts, 500' and tons of marks!!!!

dropped everthing on it ... Nothing  :smt009

All Good, My plan now is to drift back thru channel toward Ferry Point, maybe a striper, Thresher or finally Board a Hali for Dinner....

Cell Phone rings... :smt061  " oH No"..... :smt010

" Can You pick up the Boys, I want to get some extra work Done...... "

Man.... I'm at the Rock, 3 to 4 miles back to the launch, and have to get the Fellas with in a hour and 15 minutes,,,,

This is going to be a Workout and definitely Fishing is done today,,.. :smt009

So I'm Hauling Ass back to Ferry Point, aprox, where I saw the Thresher, and the Surface goes nuts Again,

Yup, another Thresher, but this one is a little smaller around 6' from Head to " Beginning " of Tail,

these things make a lot of Commotion, it's so Kool,  gave it try again, but it appears it was gone as fast as it came...

Great, exciting day on the Bay,Hook a couple of Hali's, got to see my Favorite Bay Sport Fish x2 and play

with Stripers, or is it Strippers.... :smt002

Got a Great workout, think I sweated this Lung infection out and picked up the Boys with 5 minutes to spare...

Think I'll head back out tomarrow....  :smt004

 Threshers..... Oh My.... Threshers......  :smt001

*Word of caution to newbies or anyone who paddles on the Bay,*

The conditions where perfect to make a trip across the bay, no wind, slow moving tide and minimal boat traffic, Most days I have been out there, I would have never even thought about a trek like this. The Bay can change in Moments and is not something to be taken lightly. If you do go out far, make sure you have done your homework and are constantly watching conditions.... :smt006

I think something went screwy with my depthfinder, the water surrounding this area was apro 30',

I was close to the other boat when this happened, maybe it was his sonar messing with mine or a heavy school of fish, I'm still puzzled on this one :smt102

wow. from ferry point to red rock.  I have thought about launching from point molate or is it castro point to reach red rock( I am referring to the area just under the san rafael bridge) but haven't tried because the currents is guess are too fast but you have shown that on a calm day it looks doable. can't wait to try some strippers by the rock. (that didn't sound right). oh stripers.

I don't think you can Launch anywhere around the Bridge. I have been eyeing an area that's a little north of there, Parking, a good launch, but, it's in the middle of no where, Hard to say if your car would still be there or the same as it was when ya left.

Hey Danglin,

Were you by yourself? When ever I pass by the red rock, it has always been
choppy and I can tell that the water really rips through there. I bet that was
a good workout on the legs.

Thanks for the report and pictures,

Ya, all alone,

Right by the rock is the only place the tide was moving, Tide change was very minimal today.

It was weird being out there with the Ferry Blowing by, big tugs and ships, but they were all Kool.

the sides of the Rock... Rock... there are fish all over it, and after seeing 2 Threshers out in that Channel,

I can't wait to get back out there

Don-

Great report... too bad about not getting anything to stick. Man... I can't ever remember seeing the waters around Red Rock looking that flat. Great day to be on the Bay.

THere's gooooooood hallies in around that rock too.  Get 'em loads of times in da boat.  Hit the West side on the incoming, there's a little rock that juts out, drift towards it, then down along at about 15feet.....

Sounds like a blast! So, given a choice, what would you have thrown at the sharks?

I was there when you caught that thresher you are posing with. That was a very rare catch for inside the S.F. Bay. I am not saying they were not, but it is very rare. Have you caught cow shark before?
