The ejection sounds sweet but that is no 5 footer brother.  The wave that bombed on Freddie made a 15 foot kayak completely disappear.  That was a legit 5'er  :smt001

I just finished a book that provided a scientific formula for determinining wave height:

Observed Wave Height divided by 2

I was going to ask if he had a picture of him riding that 5 footer ;)  But do look at how deeply buried Scott's bow is. That's intimidating...

Scott

In the picture, the wave was just beginning to break. At the face max when my yak was fully verticle, the top of the wave was above where my plano box is. The reason why I know this is because I wanted to eject backwards over the top of the wave instead of forward onto the beach. LK is pretty steep so the waves build really quickly in the crunch zone. That means the face was 10-12 feet at the maximum so I figure about a 4-5 ft wave. Sackyak and PJ were in a better position to judge the actual wave height and laugh.  It isn't often you can use a P15 as a wave face measuring tool :smt005

Hey Scott,

Please define what you mean by "face" in that sentence. Do you mean the vertical distance from the peak of the wave to the surface of the water just in front of the breaking wave?

Scott

Scott

The wave face from the bottom of the face which in this case was the beach where my bow was unfortunately burried  :smt005 to the top of the face. Basically the 25 yards of water in front of me you see in the picture were sucked out by the wave which left me nothing to surf so I was looking straight down at the beach and rocks.  :smt011 However for a few seconds it was the ride of a lifetime.  :smt003 Only ex-surfers would probably understand this.  :smt044

Freddie, Fuzz, and P-spark witnessed me crash and burn bad at the Bean once.  I was almost out of the cove when a huge swell started to form.  I was hoping that if I stopped paddling and waited, it would just pass under me.  What a freakin' MISTAKE!  I should have charged it instead.  It curled, swallowed me, and spit me out on the beach.  Freddie was there to pick up the pieces and then I got hammered again while standing near shore.  The BEAN was adding insult to injury. :smt009

 Strong stuff, and timely.

Sean fed me a great story idea. By that I mean terrible! Where are the Sands of Sorrow? Any beach can be a bastard, but which common (although advanced) launches exact the highest toll? BH and Limekiln leap right to mind. Down south Malibu way, it's definitely County Line. Any more?

Paul -

LK and BH certainly take it's toll. Personally having been thrashed at both, and I will say that BH is more technically challenging because of the jaws and outside break. LK on the other hand is not as technical but the shore break is rediculously punishing comparable to the "wedge" at Newport, IMO. The harriest laucnh and landing I have ever done was in Asilomar, Monterey. Tide pool/rock garden slot launch with 3-5 breakers and epic yard sales and wipe outs. Luckily it is now inside of an MLPA so others will not attempt something that stupid.  :smt005

Having been around the block (Big Sur to Elk) and being victimized myself in some big wipe outs (Linda Mar and Carmel State Beach) .Carmel State Beach has already had a history and a few deaths because of it's steep break and strong current.

I still have scarry memories of launching out of Linda Mar with GTO Eric during the "salmon year" . While everyone else decide to wait it out, Eric and I foolishly charged out to sea and nearly getting ourselves rocked by the incoming swells. We got lucky and timed it just about right.  I remember flying out of my seat when the bow of my yak pointed to the sky and it slammed down on the back side of the wave and my ass luckily landed back to my seat. EK witnessed the event and made a statement I will never forget...."Dead man paddling"  :smt044 If I was faced with the same conditions today and knowing what I know now, "I'll pass" :smt002

While we laugh about all our tragic launches and landings, let's remember that we've all been lucky so far. Be safe out there brothers! Don't venture out alone and when in doubt, go to plan B and find a more favorable spot to fish...there's always tomorrow :smt002

Well boys... believe it or not... I've wrecked a lot worse than this. But, you'll have to go way back to the days when I paddled a Fish and Die... and that was at the Bean. Luckily, that was before waterproof cameras. I must say that my wipeout was pretty bad but, when I think of really bad scenarios... I think about Scott's episode at LK. That was just gnarly and that was just the beginning of it. When I think about really punishing blows dished out... I think about Gary's buddy getting speared by his yak in the no no zone. OUCH... the look on his face was to die for... eyeballs bugging out, all red and shit... freaked out look on his face said it all. Then, I remember about a time at the Bean when I went completely verticle on a lauch and landed on my head and got crushed by my yak... that was the time when I decided to start wearing a PFD. I guess I should invest in a helmet if I want to join the GB2 crash landing club. I'm not quite there but, I'm getting closer. Still, after it was all over... and I wasn't too beat up... it was kinda fun in a sick sort of way.

I've seen some other nice wipeouts at the Bean... actually, the worse wipeouts I've seen were all at the Bean except for one that I witnessed at South Central... that was a good one. Too bad I didn't get pictures of that one but I still can visualize it like it was yesterday. Chucke's wipeout could've been a lot worse if he was closer to the shore... although, in his amazement that he got blasted, he stood in the surfzone and got tackled by another wave... that was funny.

Hey Adam... I would've gone to the north end of the cove but the sets were pushing hard and I didn't want to get caught up in a tube going sideways. I usually land at the northern part of the cove unless I know I can make it or I'm just trying to get the hell out of the water. The problem was the huge backwash. Oh well... you guys don't call me Savage for my good looks.

Freddie
