i left home in santarosa about 5am. i arrive at my friend jr's house at 5:15 to find him still asleep. After an agressive rousting, imanage to get him and all his crap on the road by 6:20. We arrive at the beach about 7:30 and run into otobepelagic, holy toledo and a couple other yakkers unloading. The swell was lean and the wind was flat so everybody was smiling. J.r. and i launch and head north with a guy named tom in a yellow p-13. After a sandwich and a quick safety-meeting,we set about dropping some lead. i was using brown 4oz lead-heads with root-beer swim-baits tipped with squid and jr was using his home-made jigs consisting of painted torpedo sinkers with hooks and squid. The copper-rockfish population is doing quite well at ft.ross. We could hardly keep the little shavers off our hooks. i heard otob and holy catch some cabezon and vermillion on the radio. it also sounded like they were having trouble with seals taking fish off their descenders. At around 9:15 i hooked into something big. it bent me hard and almost towed me into a powerboat. i got it in the net and subdued it with a bottle of 2004 kenwood zinfandel. It was a 33 inch lingcod. After acouple more hours of little fish, we headed into the beach where we were greeted by a pack of photo-hungry women from australia. They were plenty impressed by the big ling as i told them my tale of battle and bravery with the mighty and ferrocious lingcod :smt002 :smt002 My day at ft ross couldnt have gone any better.

Strong work. I love it there. How was the kelp doing after last weeks big swells and wind?

Friday night we scrolled through the ocean forecasts....... the predictions were too good to be true. Saturday morning found us at the launch where we were soon joined by KayakJack and his buds. The ocean was as flat calm with absolutely no wind and very little shore break. Patrick went shallow and I headed out to deeper water .....both on a mission. I was using big hardware but still managed to catch a couple pesky fish and at one point something very big took my descender with a fish attached. Moments later a seal appeared and though I could not prove it he looked pretty guilty.  I don't think the seal had time eat the fish before surfacing.........probably just messing with me.
Patrick called out on the radio.......seems as though he had hailed a cab. Soon after I met up with George who we have met on the water a few times before and is a fan of NCKA. George and I were reminiscing about a fish I caught a few weeks back when my rod doubles over and a serious battle ensued. I would get the fish up ten feet and he'd take back nine....this went on for a bit before finally being landed. I whipped out my trusty GWKC hawgtrough for a quick measurement.........dam....no cigar, just under my previous best for the year. The fishing was consistant but not wide open. The final tally for the day was three hefty vermilion, one big ling, some whopper coppers, two beautiful olives that will be cooked whole for tonight's meal and an absolutely humongous orange fish that was photographed and sent to the deep. Not really sure if it is it cool to post a picture of the "orange fish"???  We kept waiting for the wind to arrive and send us home but that wasn't the case. We finally got off the water a little after four but we would have landed earlier if we had been informed that the Australian supermodel bikini shoot was taking place on the beach.
Another beautiful day on the water with family, friends, and one sneaky SOB'n seal.
