FH, nice looking work there.

A while back I bought a can of olive green marine primer with the idea I would spraypaint a few stripes on the belly of my yak.

I figure it can't hurt.

So this morning after getting back home from surfing (where I surfed in sight of da island and saw what looked like for sure to be  a baby GWS, but was in fact probably a young Salmon Shark), I spray painted some olive green tiger stripes on the bottom of my old scupper pro TW.

It took about 5 seconds and no masking was involved. It also does not look 1/100th as good as FH's, but from 30 or 40 feet down, I hope it looks like something other than a skinny elephant seal or whatever the heck the dumb shark that hit Dan's boat thought his adventure was.

FH..
Don't wanna chirp in with no data, but i must say I have got strong "gut" feeling its a good thing. Even if the aposematic avoidance gene is missing, breaking the silhouette i feel should help. Even though they don't have tag data about N and S populations mixing does not mean they don't.In other fish tagging, when tagging"resident species" in large numbers, sometimes 99.9% stay on the same reef/estuary, but one maverick travels mind boggling distances to sow its wild oats. when did that gene develop? These fish are ANCIENT. when did aposematic protection develop? and when did the N and S populations of GWS separate? and whats gone on with the ocean currents/habitat and prey in this historical time line. So many variables, and I, personally have no idea what values to assign... :smt102 :smt102
So as i said my gut says its a good idea.
Hippy gut feeling number 2...Confidence and a confident projection of your shakra goes a long way..
Hydrospider, I have seen the banded wetsuits already. I think it may be an Aussie company producing them, but I could be wrong..
Since my attack my surfboards have had banded airbrush jobs. And as you know i now carry a synthetic "electric eel". Im gonna hit the yaks with some stripes soon.

Instead of YUM-YUM, it's gonna be known as BitterYellow! :smt003

Wow, that looks rad! (I know, I'm trying to bring that word back   :smt044 )

I think this might be a winter project for me if for no other reason than the cool appearance  :smt003

Interesting question, so far folks have only presented anedotal information.   An actual study of the efficacy of such a pattern would be rather easy to design.  You would troll seal or kayak shaped objects around the farralones, or other sharky digs, and see which ones got popped, and under what conditions.

Maybe we can send this thread to the shark reseach committee (or the organization that is currently doing research on sharks).

Awesome!

I, too, am trying my hardest to bring back the word rad. (And awesome, and decent.)  :smt003

I'm sure they have tried something similar already.  I'll check youtube :smt005
