Hello out there,

Fishing is always great even when you don't get any fish. Today was a great day all around, nice water conditions, weather, good company and Fish!

Got wet around 8am. The fishing part was  :fishing1 nice.
I broke my own record with a vermilion of 24" fattie.
I got out until 2pm,, than I asked Carl for Sakyak and Jmarey ?
He said they got out at 11:30, I said at 11:30? I think I'm doing something wrong or... I just like to be out there? oh well, it was worth it.

Today I had the chance to take my first picture of my self in the water and I forgot the camera on the truck :smt013 So, .. this is all I have.

hey Ramon, great job! It was good to see you out there, I saw you pass me on the highway, saw you launch and go back to help the swamped comrades, we even saw you from the cliff while driving home,  :smt005. We could tell you were having a good time!  :smt006  Way to fish it!

congrats on the 24" fattie verm,  :smt007.

I think we might have got off the water a little early, but the bite was real strong and my stringer got filled a bit too quickly. etienne was a little wiser than me, he used soley a knife jig for a high verm count, he didn't even need a tackle box, he filled his stringer with one lure. I knew it was full moon and haven't fished it in weather like that so made the mistake of using a 3" white berkely bass tube as a teaser to make sure I got some early action, and it got tazed hard with a verm, a brown, a small copper that had to be kept, and pile of solid olives, some which were released, others had to be kept. I cut the teaser off and a 6.5" big hammer swimbait in green back and clear belly on a 5oz head got a couple verms before a whopper copper destroyed it. Then I had nine fish on my stringer so I deployed an 8" black grub on a 6oz head that got attacked like crazy just deadsticked but seemed to end up with mostly whopper coppers hooked on it which I released.

The lesson for cap du nord is to stick with the big baits, no matter the weather, I think.  That place is crazy with fish.

I was a little concerned about the weather taking a turn for the worse, but I think it settled down a bit for later? I got up and saw 20 knots on the cape san martin bouy and 10 feet every 9 seconds on the pt reyes bouy. I had some concerns but saw the swell was way north (330 degrees) so we drove down to check out the fire damange and maybe fish. well the fishing was just fine but the sur definitely got some scorching.

the south wind and chop mid-morning was a little worrisome too, but that seems to have died after we got in.

Karl, good to meet you, next time you have a reel malfunction, radio to borrow one of my rods, and get alan tani on your speed dial like mooch! remember NCKA, channel 69.

Good call to make the LK run. Ramon that is the biggest verm I have seen in years. What the --- did it eat?. Sorry for the teaser J, next time maybe go solo or stick a big swim bait on the teaser 7". I would like to see some photos of Big Sur from the road. Maybe there will be a LK or south trip next weekend, PJ, Scott, e2g? Bandwagon anyone? :smt004

PJ, I did not take a pic, I kind of feel that spot might be better served with less stringer pics, but sackyak has one of his. he looked to have 6 or 7 verms. I was low-liner of the day I think, mine had 3 verms, 4 olives, a copper and what is either a brown or kelp. got into some deep olives early on a small lure and they would not release. at least they were good size olives, but not as big as the one I got trolling there that time. when it gets down to it I think I have to admit I like the fishing action as much or more than the stringer. No blues was one interesting thing, maybe they are headed north to the bean now? Also, I get to report that I did not land a single gopher!

last night we had the copper, the brown (or kelp, it had a rounded tail) and a verm and the brown got voted as the best tasting interestingly enough. didn't surprise me as I have had those fish before and they give a verm a run for the money as table fare.

Down by LK, the sur is not too scorched, but the hillside visible as you pass ventana is fried.

great report guys.  How was the launching and landing?

It was a lot better than it could have been because the swell was real north (330 degrees). if it had been west-ish (like 290) it would have been a repeat of that first carnage session this year I'm sure. as it was, the launch had a 50% success rate. the north swells were pretty big and steep once you got out deeper and were not protected by the point, but they didn't seem to affect fishing too much in that deeper water.

I checked the two buoys that have direction and frequency spectrum breakdowns (reyes, and harvest) of the wave action and so now I know that a very north short period windswell, even if pretty tall, does not affect launching and landing too much, as that launch is very south facing. a west or south can cause some real surgy excitement in that little chute of a landing area.

I only ever saw ramon fishing in shallow tho, so I am wondering if he caught all his fish shallow or not.

I am interested in going down this weekend. I will keep an eye on the weather and swell reports and let you know if I'm in later in the week.
