Very nice Eric.  When are you going to get a second and third camera so we can get some other shots in there?  I think we need to start challenging your editing skills a bit more.

Thanks, Craig.  The biggest one I've released so far was 39" and 23.5 pounds, and I've released several other 20 pound class.  I fish shallow, so there are no rockfish floaters due to barotrauma.  I also use barbless hooks for lots of my light gear fishing, and I often go with only a big terminal leadhead or iron to target lings instead of continuing to catch lots of rockfish.  I left that bare hook on there above the lead and I'd feel a little fish like that black hit it and I'd let it hang there like that.  The ling just destroyed that thing when it hit - that was a cool feeling!  I've cleaned quite a few big lings and enjoyed the meat, but you only get about 8-10 pounds of filets from a 20+ pound ling.  I'd rather harvest a 10 pounder now and then - more meat and less head.  The big bucket heads can stay and spawn - they're usually females, the biggest ones that is.  I had an awesome time on the water that day, as I always do, but it made it really special to catch and release that big ling and be able to share it here.

Excellent points Eric,
I have never had a Ling of size be so mellow when brought to the surface - it seems I always get the thrashing, death rollers. Your comments have given me a new perspective, thanks.

They tend to mellow out alot when I hold them by the outer gill plate ridge - I still swear by netting and holding vs the gaff.
