Hey, Tailwalk -

I havent figured out how to attach your message into mine, but i am responding to your question about halibut on flies.

I was on a boat at ARW back then, in my early fly fishing days.   I had only a 6 weight rod, and not much knowledge of what i was doing.   I had a 300 grain depth charge line (way too heavy for the rod, but perfect for getting down deep).   I was fishing a #6 wooly bugger in white with pink hackle and tail.   My brother was drifting bait but all he got was shredded up bait.  But, my wooly bugger was getting hit constantly, including hte halibut, the sturgeon, and even a little bull head.    The 6 wt was way too light for the circumstance.

About 2 months ago, i caught halibut again, down in Newport Harbor.   I caught the halibut on a #1 clouser on a T14 head.    That day, i also caught mackeral, sand bass, calico (or was it spotted?) bass on the clouser and other flies.
