A Potter Valley woman wounded herself and a man July 3 while attempting to kill mice with a .44-caliber Magnum revolver, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.

The woman, 43, had drawn the gun from a holster under her left arm, intending to shoot mice scurrying across the floor of a small travel trailer on Highway 20 in Potter Valley, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The revolver instead slipped from her hand and fired as it struck the floor, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The bullet went through the woman's right kneecap, then hit keys hanging on the belt loop of a 42-year-old man in the trailer, officials said. The bullet glanced off the keys and tore a hole in the man's pants.

The bullet grazed the man's groin before stopping in his coin pocket, where it was recovered for evidence, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The names of the shooting victims were not released.

"Is that a bullet in your pocket, or did I almost shoot your ****** off?"

Uh....yeah, I call that a close call for sure!

Were they watching too many Dirty Harry movies? Why is the woman carrying a .44 magnum (a magnum, no less :smt005) in a shoulder holster while walking around in a travel trailer???

Crazy peoples.

This was definitely a banjo moment! She was fairly drunk when this happened, and to top it off, the guy who caught the bullet in his coin pocket put a tourniquet on her leg to stop the bleeding. In case you didn't know, tourniquet bad! Direct pressure good! I don't know if she lost her leg or not, but it was real ugly.

When I wrote the press release on this I didn't figure it would be as big a deal that it has ended up being. I guess it hit the AP wire. Who knew!

Why is a tourniquet bad? Don't you loosen it regularly to avoid cutting off circulation permanently?

If you have a life threatening injury (severe cut, laceration, or amputation) it can save your life. If you don't, cutting off the circulation to that limb can destroy it. So all you needed was some pressure to stop the bleeding and now you need to get your limb amputated...  :smt009

Trailers, liquor, and firearms...the stuff dreams are made of. I think I've visited many a similar residence, over the years. Hey, is that an engine block or a coffee table?  It's both, dumbass!  Now cue the dueling banjos, please. And bring me my .44, I believe in the right to defend myself against the mice!

Good thing that the gunfire didn't ignite the meth lab.  :smt009

Seriously - hope all recover.

A tourniquet might be appropriate after taking a 44 mag slug through the knee.      Generally one should first apply pressure to the wound to stop bleeding.  Wonder what they'd charge her with?  Discharging a firearm within city limits I guess, possibly more if she's lost her firearm privileges due to a felony or similar.
