Thank you A. Garcia, you guys on this site are very helpfull and it is much appreciated. Scott heres a stupid question from a fisherman that is faily ignorant in the saltwater environment, what is a game clip. I am imagining it is a clip that you can place through the gills or mouth of your catch similar to what freshwater bait fishermen use for holding trout? Where can i purchase one in the SantaCruz area?

Karl,

Look at the photos of Scott's P15. There are two large spring clips that he has tethered to the yak. Those are game clips. You can find them at scuba shops or at sponser sites here..

You can use a stringer with 10 small metal clips which can be purhased at sporting good stores for rockfish. For halis and lings the game clip is preferred if you want to have all 10 fingers at the end of the day. :smt005  I think PJ doesn't use a striger or clip, just rope. I forgot to ask him how he threads it through the mouth and gills. Hook 1 also sells game clips. 2 clips is often needed at LK.

no game clip necessary.  i have some 500# line that has some stiffness to it. i take a 6 foot piece & loop one end around something behind me & thread the other thru the gill of the fish, rockfish, ling, etc. & tie the other off right up next to me.  i've never lost a fish but it can be tricky to thread the line thru their gills.

my gaff is homemade garage-bicycle hook stuck in a sawed off axe handle, works awesome, never hurts the fish.

Now see I admire that kind of ingenuity plus I'm cheap, I was thinking of trading a gourmet room comp to one of the engineers at work tommorrow for bending some heavy gauge stainless wire into the right shapes and creating one from scrap, well see if i can get it accomplished.Chances are though, since well be busy tommorrow being the 4th I will probably by it at one of the shops mentioned. I can't buy it on line Ill be gone before I get it.

What about wet suits, are you guys wearing them this time of year? I have one that I bought for this express purpose, just don't know if its needed.

I wear a 3ml farmer john with paddling jacket. Others wear waders with wading belt, full wet suit or waders over wet suit. At LK, 3ml wet suit seems most common. PJ wears a full "spiderman" wet suit which is really cool. The paddle is long and it can be hot so I used to wear a wet suit top with my farmer john but always ended up taking it off so now I keep it in my tackle box and put it on when I get cold, which hasn't happened yet. You can use waders if you have them. Jim Sammons recently tested them in a swimming pool and they took on very little water. I have an extra gaff which I will bring along in case you don't have one.

Ive got a gaff, also have a fish finder (cheap $90.00 one) which i am mounting in front, inside a tuperware kind of thing that has a very tight fitting lid and a hole in the top to feed the leads through. I'm trying to figure out where i should secure my live well, nothing expensive either, runs on AA's that fit inside a unit that clips on the side of the well. Like I said its inexpensive but looks functional. I'm trying to figure out what kind of tackle to set up for rock fishing and halibut fishing. I read the article on the Halibut but have to admit I am a little confused by the stinger hookset up he's talking about. I have some diamond jigs and a squid jig or two for the rock fish. I am assuming what will work in Santa Cruz will work at Limekiln, but you know what they say about assuming.

For hali fishing, live bait rules and you can use a 3 way or carolina rigged live bait hook matched to the size of your bait. The bait swims better with the lighter ringed hooks but fo hali's probably overkill. A trap or stinger rig adds a small treble hook trailing the live bait hook (snelled). Casting small to medium size swim baits can break up the boredom of drifting live bait. 2-3 rods are common with hali fishing. For anchovies, a live well is good. For sardines, smelt and macs, a bait tube works OK. When I fished the 2XL, I used to throw the fish/stringer to the bow and kept my tackle/bait bucket behind me.

For Limekiln, you do not need live bait. Frozen squid or anchovies/sardines works well. 4-10 oz diamond jigs with a whole squid trailer works for lings and big verms. If fishing is slow, some smaller plastics would be good like swim baits, kalin grubs and scampis in the 4-6" range on 1-6 oz lead heads. Green with silver flake, blue & white, Rootbeer/motor oil gold flake, black, and glow are all good. Have 1 # squid for each day of fishing. I carry 1 bag of gulp saltwater plastics (squid, shrimp, swimbaits, grubs) in case I run out of squid. You may want to pick up your rockfish stuff in the Bay Area, Santa Cruz or Monterey.

Karl,
My son and I are planning to fish on Monday and Wednesday out of the Santa Cruz area. If I read this thread correctly you are looking to hook up Wednesday with someone, you are more than welcome to join us. While not the best fisherman by a long shot I have a bit of ocean experience and happy to share it. Send me a PM if interested and let's talk by phone to work details. We can also post in "hookups" but at this point we have not made a decision on where to go. Have talked about Bean Hollow on Monday and perhaps Monterey on Wednesday, but flexable to your needs for Wed.

Karl,
I will give you a call a little later today and we can work out a plan. I have a crew here that I'm working with clearing brush/trees and need to be out with them.

things ain't looking too good for ole' LK.  the road is now closed 43 miles north of cambria, LK is @ mile 53. sometimes the smoke down here is a little on the uncomfortable side. some neighbors of mine actually left town for a few days during the week.

the scuttlebut is that the fire isn't going out any time soon.

i'm bummed i was hoping i could get Scott to cary my boat for me down to the water :smt001
