Got the skunk off!!!!

Sorry no pics this time, still need to pick up a waterproof camera.

Left the dock in SC Harbor around 6:15, was hoping to have some company, but didn't see a soul.

I paddled to a point off of the Lighthouse on West Cliff Drive about 1/2 way between there and the mile buoy.

No kakaks but a lot of power boats. Dropped some meggabait with a shrimp fly tied about a foot above and a chovy.

Started catching gophers immediatelly, most were pretty small, but a few were keepers. In about 50 feet of water.

Started attracting attention with the hookups, and before you know it every dinghy, and small john boat was surrounding me. I was the only one with a FF.

Kept it up for a few hours and then started just paddling around to get a feel for the structures and looking for some more fish.

After the first couple hours, it slowed down considerably and I didn't see anyone else catching anything.

I paddled over to the kelp beds near the boundary buoy and watched the divers for a while. They were coming up very excited about the lings the were seeing down there. I wanted to drop a line, but didn't want to interfere with their diving and get them in a mess of line.

I marked the spot and will go back there early in the morning before the divers get there.

Good day to be fishing, too bad I didn't have any company and was very surprised that I didn't see any yak fishers anywhere.

Left the water at 11:00 and paddled back.

If anyone wants to go back Sunday, PM me.
I finally got the skunk off!

Nicely done. Congrats on getting rid of that smelly skunk. Did you do best on the megabait or the shrimp fly teaser?

Thanks everyone for the support.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna lurk around the area that Sc X Factor caught the hogs.

I was out there between noon and 3:30. Must have just missed you. Paddled from the harbor out to the lighthouse. I was fishing the kelp beds, but some divers anchored right next to me and started diving under my kayak! Really rude.  :smt013

I moved to deeper water to avoid hooking them, even though they deserved it. Got some small rockfish on the shrimp fly, but no takers on the squid. Ran into Snapperhead out there as I was leaving.

When I was back in the harbor, I saw another diver and asked him what was going on out there with all the spearos. He said that it was the last day for them to qualify for a tournament, which is why the divers were so rude. He said they won't be out there any more in those numbers. The interesting thing he told me was that they were all getting lings. They were way inside the kelp, though, so pretty hard to target them with a hook. One of the lings he shot even had a treble hook in its mouth.

After lunch at the Crow's Nest, I went down to Capitola pier to see how it went down there. They guy at the bait shop said that only one halibut was caught all day, and one or two lings.

Sorry we missed getting together.

That must have been you going out as I was coming in. Didn't have my radio so I couldn't give you a yell.

I had the same prop with the divers too, there must have been a dozen of them in the kelp beds.
I also heard them talking about all the lings.

Check our Sc x factor's posts to dee the butt he got near the cap pier. Awesome fish.

I'll be going out from cap pier tomorrow if you're interested in coming along. Either that or a trip back to the kelp beds to see if any lings are left there.

Whatever you decide to do get some live chovies and put them in a bucket or bait tank with something to keep them kicking. All the fish love live chovies. Most of the bait has been stacked near the Capitola pier. Launch there, bait up and go. Good luck.

Pretty slim chance I'll make it out again tomorrow. I'll look for you if I do.

Yeah, good to meet you too.  You'll definitely like paddling the P15 a lot better.
