I'm starting to read Albie reports from down south, and its making me all giddy and stuff.  I'VE GOT THE FEVER!!!

Am I the only one here that would mortgage the house, sell the dog, to get that chance at albacore?  What is it about that fishing that is sooooooo enticing?

I'm publically stating that my goal this year is to get an albie from the yak. I'm gonna beat the bushes, and shake the trees to find the right mothership captain (I know AT is willing). Already got the pass from wife to pick up at go at 6hours notice...

now we just need the water to warm...and a miracle of lower fuel prices

I've never had the pleasure of going out for albacore, but my Dad had the fever you're referring to, Steve.  The last few Summers he got all worked up, new boat, radar, all the big reels and rods and cedar plugs...etc.  He did some trips out of Oregon and several out of Humboldt Bay.  Last Summer on his last trip he had our neighbor with him and was fighting a hell of a fish that he thought could've been his Bluefin and it was lost by the boat.  He loved the albie chase.  Rest in peace, Dad, I hope you're still chasing albies, and I know you're still making the world a better place because of the all the quality people walking around infected with your positivity, generosity, and energy.   :angel7:

Because my Dad was so into it I would like to check it out.  If the albie chase brings you this far north be sure to get in touch.

Abking,

I fish with a buddy here for albies a few times a year, and at least once there's an open spot and we're looking for another person- you might just have to make that drive for one of those trips!

Fever!     It's more than a fever!       We have been chasing them for years.........personal best was 33 to about forty pounds for two of us a few years back. Last year we headed out of Bodega and fished as far south as ten miles below HMB and  +45 miles out. That day we put over 185 miles on the boat for albies and two yellowtail. Two years ago we caught two  dink bluefin (15-18 lbs) with our mix of albacore. We have yet to mothership but it's in the works. We will probably put in a non-mothership trip or two before attempting. Did I mention we get a little more than one mile to the gallon at about 27 knots.   Our boat name says it all.............

Yup, I'll second that.  Probably the only fever I HOPE to get.

o2b...

Yah-- i had my trip of the year last year as my 3rd trip that year....launched with a buddy from HMB, 25 miles out we put the lines in-- water was flat flat flat, calm and we were back at the dock with a dozen or so fish by 1pm!  there were only two of us and all fish came as a multples, and on bait. We had four fish hanging at one point, with fish boiling around the boat!  all were in the mid 20#s. After dressing 'em we looked at each other and said, "that's enough" let's head in...

could have sunk the boat that day with fish....

Let me know if you do a trip-- i'm always down...even with the fuel costs this year

Oh I got the fever all right, although the last few years have been bad for me with all the travel and the water being finicky as it has been.  I used to get out 8-10 times a year, back before I became a kayak angler.

Been trying to work the mothership details the past few years, but haven't been able to pull it off.  If anyone is serious about giving it a go this year, and would like some company, I'd certainly be up for it ...

It's been nearly two years since Freddie and I did the maiden mothership trip on Alan Tani's new Grady.  I'm still waiting on standby for ideal albie conditions and "the call" from the captain.  I hope this is that year.
