It was 5:40 am when I got to the Bean Hollow right after sunrise.
The water was awesome, nice and flat, no wind . Sean and I left the cove around 6:30 than after a while, Gary, Eugene and David came along.

Everything look fine until after two hours of fishing for two bites -two
little fish. That was it...no bite= no fish = no fun.

When I was driving down on highway 1. The water looked so nice
That I was hoping to get some fish. I had all I needed. Including
some Jigs that I have made during the week for my plan of attack. I didn't get to try them because of NO FISH!!  :smt010
And I said no fish because the other guys haven't report anything.
I wonder if they got some.

Two skunks in a roll.... That stinks :smt003

How many times in a roll you have been skunked ? :smt001

Here is a picture of the weapon I used.... I like it... I didn't get
snags and hold a squid really nice... But NO FISH!!! :smt044

did you mark any schools of blues/blacks/yellowtail/olives? any bait like mackerel?

did you see the clear sky and full moon and morning low tide? fishing might be better later in the day today?

ramon, your weapon looks good. did you use any small teaser at all or just the big gun?

I like the looks of that squid stuffing!  Do you slide it on, and then find the nubb to slide the snap swivel onto????

After Ramon and Sean launched Nate (Bungle), Eugene (Paddlefish) and myself prepped and launched.  Nate and Eugene worked the shallow just north of the bean and I worked the northern rocks out further in about 50 to 60 feet of water.  I'll let the others tell their story.

Mike (GoutlessAngler) and Marvin (?) (Shicken) launched late and it was just in time for the wind to pick up.  I will say that they did good for being BH virgins, they landed upright and didn't get wet.  BTW nice helmets guys, if I remember I should bring mine as well.  Sorry no "agony of defeat" highlights.

Not much to show for my efforts, 3 small gophers (released), two lings (both shook the hook) and a 20" cabbie (kept = fish tacos).  Didn't mark any bait balls and didn't detect any blues, blacks or any rockies except for the gophers.

Ramon, not to worry, once it warms up BH will be the place to go.  You can test out your rigs then.  When you showed them to me on the water In addition to that you need to work the reefs either north or south of the launch.  Straight out from the bean is mostly sand (halibut country).

Weather wise it was warm but not hot.  The wind didn't start up until about noon.  There was a gentle swell until the wind picked up.  Big waves today but launching wasn't much of an issue.  However, the wave sets were inconsistent during the landing.  I kept counting the waves and Nate finally said "let's go".  So we made a banzai charge...that must have been a sight two Tarpon 160's on an all out sprint.  I'm sure JTF would have been proud.

Attached is my ABKing picture...

Hi Andy :smt006

Correct, The stuffing fits right into the squid and hook into the head.

sandman, did you see those lings, or just something big that came unbottoned deep?

I was thinking this weekend would be first good one for the bean, sounds like you came close, if you'd landed the lings and the big cabby, that is a big stringer.

Ramon,

I've had multiple bad sessions, definitely when there is a decent south swell running as there was yesterday.  I believe that long period swell will really effect the shallower spots, especially if there's sand around the reefs.

Good luck, keep trying, maybe we could hit Big Sur next weekend.

The first ling gave the classic tug-a-war fight going up and down 2 or 3 times in 50 feet of water, stripping off line against the drag for short bursts until I managed to get it to the surface.  Once we made eye contact, positive ID and quick/dirty visual measurement (about 30") then it made another good long power dive.  Finally when I yo-yo'd it back on the surface I reached for the net to find out that the web had snagged on a guide on my spare rod.  I tucked the loaded rod under my leg and unsnagged the net but the loss of rod/line pressure let the ling spit the hook...oh well...

The second ling did a couple of line stripping runs but popped the hook before I could see color.  Yes, two lings on a game clip with a 20" cabbie would have been impressive but that's why we keep going back for more...

On the next trip I hope some vermilion, blues/blacks and halibut show up as well.

Tight lines,

Gary

I really agree with PJ on this one, especially for santa cruz, but the bean faces almost due west and has the aNo island just below it so is generally shielded from south swells, but it might make sense to fish a little deeper that day.

go south, or go deep (or both!) seems to be the early season lesson, unless it's a warm water year.
