I recently served on a jury for a civil suit. Some dumb ass tried to claim he tripped and broke his wrist on some old lady's sidewalk and was trying to sue her and the city of Santa Rosa.

Anyway, the defense attorney for the city was Mike Casey, who survived a pretty viscious GWS attack while bodyboarding at Bodega Dunes beach in 2003.

got a super random email from Phil asking if I was down for a "coffee ride" and to meet him at San Vicente and Ocean in Santa Monica on Friday morning.  Random, considering we exchanged emails last fall but off comms since.  Boss gave me the day, packed my gear and Iflew down.  Next thing you know, we're spinning down San Vicente blvd, cut over Sunset and we're climbing through some hills in Brentwood I hadn't ridden since my UCLA cycling team days!  So fun going through the old haunts. 

My rear derailleur must've gotten wacked in the cargo box b/c i could not shift into the 23 and skipping gears like crazy, then my rear hub started making noises, WTF.  Ended up at a Bfast joint in Venice, he rides home i ride back to hotel, answer some emails.  Shower and pack my bike into the cargo box and schedule a fedex pickup from hotel to ship bike home, then attempted to haul ass back to LAX for my flight.  At 1:10, Standstill on the 10 to 405 intersection, and I'm thinking no f'ing way I'm going to make my 2:20 flight.  Call SWA and had them rebook me on next available, which was 7PM, yuck.  Ducking heavy LA traffic, return rental car, shuttle takes forever, sprint to terminal, stalled at security . . .  all the while thinking no way i'm going to make it . . . . run like hell to the gate . . .  gates still open!  I rebook to original flight make it onto the plane home, what a relief.  Felt like an Amazing Race contestant 

Phil a genuinely nice guy, and hardcore fan and student of cycling.  Rattled off a million stories, but wasn't douchey about his experiences.  I still have to read his book and watch his ride across america documentary.

Any runners here?  I ran SF Marathon today and came upon Dean Karnazes at mile 11!!  He was running the ulta 52.4 miler, started running at midnight.  When I ran into him, he wasn't zipping through so we were able to conversate for a couple mins.  He was so cool, teased him and told him he should order us a pizza.  Super awesome dude.

At Six Flags last summer rode the Tazmanian Devil with Tim Brown.  Didn't realize it was him, but the son-in-law spotted him.  We waited until everyone was off and he asked for a picture with him.
Really nice guy, didn't hesitate to stop and talk and let me take a pic of the son-in-law with him.  The whole thing seemed totally random.
