That's a good area. The problem is visibility... or lack of. Usually the vis there is measured in inches instead of feet. But on a rare good vis day, the area can be very productive for butts and WSBs.

I know a few who have speared them in Santa Cruz at Cowells Cove,  but again it is vis dependent.  I know they catch halibut and seabass around Capitola.  All I ever catch there is spiny dogfish.  I hate those friggin things.

I know that they do it at delmonte beach in monterey. they do very well from what I have been told. If I where to try something like this would any body be interested in doing this. We use to spear big starry flonder in side the break water at halfmoon bay. This was before the iner harbor was built. now I would not eat anything from threre. It was rated the third dirtiest harbor in calalast year. I use to be the deckhand on the hulicat and spent many days there.

I'd be willing to give it ago.  Tried once a few years ago off Del-Monte, it was early and not a fish to be found.  There was some kelp and rockfish in the area - vis was about 20'.

Where's the cement ship area? I went WSB fishing off the state park at Capitola once. They were slaying them (hook and line) all week, then the bite dropped off for the weekend.

Just out of curiosity what came first the ship or the pier ? My guess would be the ship ?

If my memory is right, the ship was a WW1 transport ship finished after the war ended.  Some company bought it and beached it on purpose.  They opened a night club/casino on it but the biz failed.  They built the pier to get to the ship.

Back in the day I used to fish off the ship it's self.  I think today it's closed off.  Don't remember catching a lot (if anything)

Thanks for the info , had no idea of the history of the ship/pier - very interesting . Remember as a kid that was a popular spot for salmon , one of the very few spots you could get salmon without a boat .

I believe there used to be a dance hall out there as well.  Now it's most well known as a spot where people can catch undersized halibut and get away with it. :smt011
