Got on the water late today around 10:30 paddled out to the red buoy to meet A crowd of NCKA members already out. Caught and realeased my first Ling on the yak today, he was only 22" but still A great day for me. Naerob was kind enough to measure for me he also took A pic for me, for my camera decided to take A dunk. :smt010 Ended up with A nice 18" red  I was targeting sand dabs. Caught two dabs one blue and one olive. One of our fellow members got jumped by A seal, but I will let him tell the story.I took my older brother out with me for his first time and the only word to say is hes hooked.

It was a good time out there today.  The seal attack was pretty freaky wasn't it!?  Nice red.  I ended up with a couple keepers, a brown and a copper.

Oh....my....God!!! I hope no one was hurt! I'm sitting on pins and needles! Who was it pray tell! Did he make it out of the water okay? I hope this doesn't deter him from joining us again. Can we hear his story?

I was pushing my luck all day and finally paid the price.

I showed up to MBK late and no one was there. I went over to Mickey Ds to use the facilities when Frank showed up and told me we where a go at MBK, they had checked out Coral St. but it was no go. I head over to MBK start unloading, crap no wetsuit! Well the day was already warm so I decided to go savage style. Luckily Mike let me borrow some wet suit shorts. I geared up and set to launch in 6" surf. I didn't even bother watching the surf and just launched. As soon as I start paddling the biggest wave of the day starts heading for me. It is not big but I time it perfectly so it breaks over my bow and down the length of my yak. I am soaked. No gear lost though. I fire up my FF and almost immediately get a low voltage signal. I guess the rechargeable batteries don't do well after a 6 month layoff.  :smt013

I troll down to the condos for nada then head out to join the group. It was dead slow fishing wise but the bay was alive with life, lots of whales and the most sea lions I have seen in one place in a long time. Some where cruising and some where running around like chickens with there heads cut off.

We headed down to the red buoy in front of cannery row. Frank joined us and the action was still dead. I decided to bum a sabiki off of Frank and do some dabbing. I am feet away from Frank and Mike when this sea lion breaches off the right side of my bow. He was moving fast. I was pretty sure he saw me so I figured e was going to go under me. Nope he had a different idea. He did one of those double skip jumps right into my lap! I was stunned staring this sea loin in the face. He is barking up a storm so I decide he need to leave and go to push him off. At this point my yak is still remarkably stable. Then he takes a jump off the side of the yak which tips me over to the poin of no return and I fall out. All that happened in what felt like 2 seconds. I am pretty sure I screamed like a girl at some point in there.

Now the fun part. I had not self rescued in the Maraurder before, it is a lot harder than the Prowler. The high sides back it really difficult to hop up and get your belly over the rail and my belly is a bit bigger than before  :smt003 Lucky for me Frank and Mike stabilized my boat and I climbed back on board.

All I could think was WTF? Then Frank has to start on the GWS stuff.  :smt044 I did inventory and I did lose anything. I am pretty good at falling out of my yak! This was not an attack. Just some freaked out sea lion looking to get out of the water and decided my yak was the best spot. I told him next time Frank is used to swimming so go to his yak.

Thanks again to Mike and Frank for the assist, I would have been a Popsicle without it. Lesson of the day, practice self rescue when you get another yak!

I think having a seal sitting on anybody's lap will get the feminine side out of anybody :smt003
It's not something I want to experience myself but I'm sure I would scream like a girl too! :smt003

I met up with Mike and Frank at MBK at 6:30 we drove over to Coral st and decided to head back to flat water at MBK.  On my first stop I an underling about 20" then the fish kept getting smaller 4 small blues an olive a copper and a sanddab. Fishing wasn't great but watching the whales was cool.
It was nice to meet you Bill, Frank and Stoked4fish :smt006, lets do it again!

Bill:

that is an epic story.  I wish you had a picture of the seal in your lap.  I would have been more concerned with what else was in the water that made that seal think sitting in your lap was a good idea.  Hope to see you on the water soon.

I keep telling myself it was a bull chasing a young buck, but yeah he was moving and freaked out. Pretty sure he was fine until he saw Frank :-)
