Some people prefer to face into the current others away (towards the fishing) either way just make sure you have a good quick release system and know how to use it. This is key in case you get into a situation where you need to get moving quickly. I have anchored in prety fast tidal zones (see http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=211 for pics) and my setup held pretty well. The release is not as quick as I would like it to be so I am going to do some re-engineering this winter.

I fish steelhead out of an 8' pram in the winter and Bill is 100% correct you have to be able to release your
anchor fast, you won't water ski you will be pulled under. Most anchoring  is common sense if you feel
nervous about anchoring somewhere don't. Never count on your anchor to hold  there are many reasons it
will come loose or grab unexpectedly. When you set anchor in current look at everything around you
especially below you cause that's where you will be drifting with little or no control.

Never fished salmon or steelhead out of a yak but am ready to go for it.
I am in Santa Rosa only 90 minutes away and want to fish the Feather and the American for Salmon bad.
I have a trailer to help with a shuttle so we don't have to paddle up river.                                       Mike
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Mike - a steelhead caught from a kayak is my next "mission"....(my very first mission was a salmon off a yak over 20 #'s = mission accomplished! My second mission is a brown trout over 10 pounds....still working on it....but I did catch my first brown at loon lake not too long ago...nothing big - but it was a beautiful looking fish. :smt007

Mooch I fish the Russian for Steelhead all winter it's 10 min. from my house in Santa Rosa I also have a family vacation home in Healdsburg thats got beach access and its always empty in winter so its a great place to crash.  I fish a lot when conditions are right and am always looking to shuttle with someone. I'm a NKG but I'm am looking foward to fishing with you guys at Mendo, I've got a lot to learn about kayakin. We will talk Steelhead. If you and Sean do any pre fishes at Mendo let me know I would love to tag along.

Hey all, I was reading your posts about kayak salmon fishing.  I wanna go too.  But  I didn't know there were so many from here in sac.  When's everyone going?  I'm available and have a fish finder on the kayak I want to try out.
