question , suppose you have a medium or larger fish on and have some kind of issue that causes your rod to end up in the drink , is it gone ? Seems to me it would be unless you had more line out than the depth of the water . Personally I, although unexperienced will go with a leash .

I have lost hold of my floatation-equipped rod with a fish on, but it was a cabby and and at the bottom. short story, retrieved rod, landed cabby.

fishing with a leashed rod is way less fun.

I do use leashes for launching and landing (when I don't stow the rods).

Chucke, you might want to try the double sided velcro strips. Just cut it to length, and wrap it. Comes right off if you don't want it on there. It's worked fine for me.
