Nice workmanship, but....what do we do with them?  Move fish around for cleaning them?
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

I think it's for scrambling brains, but I could be wrong.

I'd put money on it that you're not - and what a way with words, you had me in stitches. :smt044

yes this spike is to brain the fish so that it does not struggle and suffer / build acids. i typically do this as soon as a fish is caught when using hook and line or speargun. i wanted something i can use from a boat.

looks like an old time lobotomy surgery instrument, same idea i guess.

so this is pretty much to "apply directly to the forehead" : )

the stainless spike is made from a 1/4 stainless rod and i just put it in a lathe and sharpened it up with a flap wheel on a grinder. i dont know what gauge spike commercially sold spikes are so i'll find out how easy this is to use when i get out fishing again. maybe they typically use a thinner spike?

i'll report back when tested: )

ACE is where I usually go for bungie, they're more of a hardware store than a home improvement/garden center.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

Cool spike/pithing tool.

West Marine carries a good assortment of bungie as well. Different sizes as well as colors.

One of these days, I'll find a small kiln, then I'll  use up some of my 1/4" 17-4 PH stainless on good stuff like gaff hooks. 304 is just fine, but it's kind of nice to use something a bit harder when you are putting a point on it.

Scott

P.S. Actually, before the kiln, I really ought to get my South Bend running again....
