how in the world would you guys set up a motorcycle to haul your freediving gear to go up and get some abalone. i would like to build some sort of a rack for the back of my bike that can hold my weight belt, fins, suit and accessories. i would not carry a speargun and only need it to haul gear for ab diving. i was thinking of mounting a large pelican case on a homde welded rack but them those can get wide. or should i just make a rack with a tall back to strap gear to? while diving i would just lock my riding gear to the bike to prevent theft and just dive in places like FR cove where its easy in and out with safe parking.

any ideas? with rising gas costs this might be a good alternative for myself who is on a limited budget.

: )

I don't know how dangerous they are, but a sidecar would work pretty good. You wouldn't have to put your foot down at stoplights either.

i like the sidecar idea but its expensive and i'd be forced to sit in traffic as well : ( its a great concept and i think it'll be taking on more popularity as more bikes hit the road. ive been seeing all types of wheeled vehicles recently. there was a scooter on 101 that had 2 front wheels and one rear , many more scooter sized bikes with bigger engines for highway use. i think sidecars will make a comeback with rising gas prices.

how about a motorcycle trailer?  With the weight belt, your center of gravity is going to be pretty high.

John what bike do you have? There are some army surplus water cooler bags that might work good for you.

I have been looking at getting a suzuki 250 for around town. Wouldn't be good for freeway use as its too light but I will love the 65 mpg.

Ah, yes the all important perk of being able to skirt through traffic.  Forgot about that one.  I have seen those trailers like Dave was mentioning, but those probably take away some of that freedom and mobility.

i have a kawasaki z1000 2003 which i picked up at a salvage yard and rebuilt it to use for commuting. the mileage is not great but better than my old jeep cherokee and it can get through traffic ok. i dont really care about the cosmetics much so a little salt water shouldnt hurt it too much. what are the surplus water cooler bags? those sound neat: )

Fabricate something like this for the side of the bike, shove everything in a snowboard bag and you're good.

Personally I think you should just wear your wetsuit and shove the fins/weightbelt and abs in a backpack.  :smt001

Actually this is close to what I've seen. At salt point I ran into a guy who stuffed all his gear into a full size back pack and set it on the seat behind him and lashed it tightly to the sissy bar, he put the weight belt in at the bottom of the bag so it was actually even with his butt so as not the put too much weight up high.  As long as you're thinking of modifcations a sissy bar ought to fit the bill.  wiki definition  A sissy bar, also called a "sister bar", "bitch bar" or "passenger backrest",  :smt002

Have you thought of just using a backpack, I have one i purchased that is heavy mesh and nylon reinforced that is specifically designed for diving gear. You could either keep your weight belt at the bottom or just wear it to keep your center of gravity low and make for some good finger pointing on the road. There is another brand that does a nice rubberized nylon backpack/dry bag w/ roll down top by a brand called Sealine, these are MilSpec and used by Seal-teams and other wet water ops guys. I do not think these will drain or allow things to dry like the one I purchased from DeepSee, but never the less a Bomber design and a lifetime warranty if I recall.   Mike

How far do you have to travel??
I know for a fact I would be so tired on the way home I would probably crash the bike.

I picked up a Suzuki DR350 almost two years ago, to save gas and to ease parking in the city. Yes, it does suck on the freeway, but it is a ton of fun around town. I ride it every day and have seen my fuel costs plummet.

If it were me, I would stuff all that gear in a backpack. Any other method will turn the bike into a sailboat if there is any wind.
I've contemplated building a surfboard rack for my DR, but it sounds like a pain in the ass and very dangerous.

Bloodbath here,
Have you ever heard of Carver Surfboard racks for bicycles? They make em for rear of bikes, and you can definitely modify this to suit your ab diving needs. Add a basket, strap things down, ready to go. Bring the spear too! The pole spear that you can break down. Good Luck!
