I'm down for the opener. Frank, I'm glad to see someone has "the madness" worse than me :smt005
(actually its been on my mind for months, I've just been putting off posting to see what the weather will look like)
Santa Cruz area or even Big Sur were my considerations. I've got a new siwashed megabait I'm eager to try.

Looks like we have a north and south crew in for the opener. Any competition for the two crews? Maybe largest fish? or smallest for the south crew? :smt044 Yeah that's right I said it  :smt070

Monster Guppy, and myself will be taking that thursday off and head over to Still Water Cove Pebble Beach... Ive been casing the joint and feel that its going to be very productive.. Hope to see some of you fellas out there. Andy

Last night I spent hours reading all the posts for Stillwater, and if past predicts future, it sounds like it would be a great choice.  Was also the first place I launched for fishing the big blue just last year, so sounds fitting to be the first place I hit for the season.  I'm still going to guess it will be pretty busy for opening day, if not the day(s) after.

I'd like to try Limekiln instead. It's very easy to stray over to the restricted areas at Stillwater as far as I understand it.

From what I see, stay away from the pinacles, and not too far south west, and you should be fine.

Talked with Brain and he and I will be heading points north with a tentative Shelter Cove fishing locale. If the wheather is favorable probably camp at the Shelter Cove Camp Grounds which offers all the amenities that a single minded fisherman could want.
If any ideas are brewing in those :anger feverish rock fishing minds out there post and lets get this started. Reason for the Northern route is the Mendo Derby is that weekend so WHY THE HELL NOT! :smt010
I'll follow up on a camp site so post if your in.

Any suggestions from the Northern Boys would be appreciated.

Wow!  Coming all the way to Shelter Cove - way to go, guys!  Good luck.  I'll be down in Monterey for a conference on 5/1 and 5/2, or I would've tried to join you.  Watch the wind forecast, and also be aware of potential yelloweye protection measures that may kick in before the opener - there's talk that Shelter Cove may be closed to rockfishing this year.   :smt009

As the trip approaches and the weather is known I'll kick down info I have on where to fish.   :smt001

Jim , it's good to see you posting and yeah let's hook-up. Tell your crazy houseboy too.

Abking,
Damn - I hate to miss you guys.  Maybe my conference will get cancelled!

Isn't their leave time for Mental Stress or just start drooling on the bosses desk just before your conference, that will do the trick. :smt003

I requested the day off just for openers in Monterey and if i get the thumbs up I will be launching out of MBK as early as possible High tide is at 07:48 at 3.9ft and low is at 14:00 at 0.2ft it would give me enough time to make my rounds to the yellow can in front of the Hotel, then to the bell buoy  and back.

Abking make sure you bring your VHF. where is your conference at? (Portola Plaza)

We've fished the reefs off Santa Cruz for years on opening day, and there are some quality fish. But back then I was in our boat...21 foot PB.

Now with my yak and no Salmon season, there are going to be a S$@tload of PBs, so bring an airhorn and a tall flag....scary but thats part of the adventure??

Or stay close in , just outside the kelp beds from Lighthouse to Natural Bridges, bring light tackle, and have a blast with some really angry kelp bass..
