The count down has begun!  Look for a thread in the near future in this forum called "Elk Open" Once it is posted there will be an email link to signup.  Signup is as follows:

Non-county residents

1. Be one of the fisrt 50 non-mendocino residents to send an email AFTER the link is posted.
2. You will get an email with reg. packet files attached.  The reg materials and payment will need to be recieved via mail at GWKC within 10 days of the "opener" or I will take the next person on the wait list.
3. You can only email for yourself, no group sign-ups

Residents

1. We are not limited by time or numbers in this category so take your sweet loving time getting it in, but I would appreciate a head count so please email as soon as possible.

Lets make this the best Elk ever!!!!

Hi Sean - given the increasing number of interested folks has there been any discussion given to making this a random lottery draw, rather than a free-for-all?

Right now there is very little chance for folks to have a chance if they happen to be away from their computers at the time, or if they can only check the site periodically given work or whatever.

Seems like some type of lottery draw, like those for limited hunts, might be a fair and equitable way to give everybody a legit chance for a slot. All options open to discussion but perhaps grandfather in the top 3 from the previous year and then have a 1-2 week sign-up to register followed by a random draw to fill the slots.

Current system seems biased against some, and has the flavor of the Friday morning-day after Thanksgiving- shopping stampede at your local WalMart  :smt002

Just a few thoughts for discussion, perhaps this has already been discussed.

Best - Bird

Hey now, that stampede at WalMart can be a fantastic time with a good soundtrack and the appropriate gear.

There may be a better way to sign up,possibly seniority based?, but I cant help but get a little creeped out whenever I experience the "not fair" thing.
could be a long wait. better stock up on the redbull and porn.

I think it a seniority system would be cool with those who founded and/or attended previously getting first dibs on the entries and then possibly a lottery system for the rest of the spots. Just my 4-cents (allowing for inflation).

I have a bunch of models in mind for Elk spot dispersement.

1.) First come, first serve - The current system.  This system seems to benefit those with no life who check this site often (I should do okay again this year).

2.) Lottery - This one has been mentioned already and I find it kind of boring.  But in the end it's probably the most fair.  The odds of getting spot are 50 in 1440.  But realistically, not everyone actually wants to attend, but I bet there are couple hundred of you out there.  Remember this thing has been advertised a bit outside of this site this year so who knows.  I just couldn't imagine a big event like this without the likes of ChuckE, Mooch, Bill or any of the regulars you come to expect.

3.) Invitational - I believe this is basically the seniority system mentioned.  As this would probably benefit me the most (at least I hope it would), I'm very much in favor.  This however is probably is the least fair to the other 1400 members not invited.  Who decides?  What are the criteria? (AOTY standing, # posts, how long you've been a member, previous tournaments won/placed, time volunteered at other events, etc..?)  With out a defined system this simply becomes an "old boys network".

4.) Auction - Imagine how much these spots might fetch if this was set up as an auction.  I'm thinking a dutch style auction where the price starts ridiculously high and slowly lowers to something reasonable.  People willing to buy high can buy as many spots as they want, then the price lowers again.  This continues until all the spots are gone.  A charity or something should probably benefit from the large amount of money made.  This method of course isn't very fair to those of us without a ton of extra cash.

5.) Alphabetical by Last Name - Okay now I'm just getting silly.

In the end, this is a Great White Kayak Company tournament.

GWKC is the organizer, host, and primary sponsor... it would not happen if not for GWKC.

Sean has the right to open up the registration any way he sees fit and I support him in that.

With that said, Sean is a very reasonable guy and I'm sure that whatever the course of action, it will be as equitible as can reasonably be expected.

I don't like random lotteries... simply being lucky shouldn't determine who goes to this event.  This event deserves to be filled with the people who want to be there the most.

My two-cents...

I agree entirely with Eric on this one.

Elk is great, errr INCREDIBLE place for a tournament and the facilities are rocking with all the ammenities. What makes Elk such a good time is the people. I would support an option to move the tourny to some place that will accomodate a larger group.
