One of the nice things about NOT being in the AOTY is that you can have a great time watching all of your friends catch fish and not feel bad that you are not catching any yourself. I had a great time reconnecting with all of my salt water friends. Lots of butts landed today with one of the biggest by FishinJay (AKA Jimmy Buffet). It was all "margaritaville" for Jay today. Like I said this morning Jay, today you will be glad you didn't move to Alabama. Tell me I'm wrong.  :smt005

Thanks for posting the pics! I can't find my download cable for my camera at the moment.

You're right, it was a great time! It sounds like there were fish all over the Berkeley flats even though I heard several of the PB's complaining of a skunk.

My first, the biggest  came after a PB trolled past me and hooked up two short ones right in front of me. I changed my angle a bit to troll right behind where they had just hooked up and suddenly BENDO!

Once I welcomed the fish aboard, it measured out at 30". This was my first halibut from a kayak and gave me a great fight, ripping drag and zipping under my boat each time it saw the net.  :smt003

The second fish was smaller at 24" and it came at almost exactly the same spot about a mile north of Brooks Island.

Thanks to Rory and Otobepelagic for the intel on Friday. Based upon their report I trolled herring in an RSK behind a big dodger which turned out to be the ticket for me today.  :smt006

Also thanks to John (Backcountry) who hung out with me throughout the day. He was right in the same area as me, but no halibut for him. Luck of the draw I guess.  :smt102 Once I landed the second fish he paddled over and put the jinx on me by saying "Wow, one more fish and you've got a limit."  :smt077 The bite promptly died!

Looking forward to the next halibut hookup!

Yesterday was great, even though I got skunked.  Met up with FishinJay at 6:15 and we were on the water by about 7:00am (even before team-InsaneDuane)... off at about 1:00pm... man, hell of a current and breeze to fight against getting back to the launch at that time... I wouldn't have bothered to fight it and kept fishing except I had honey-do's that needing attending to.

For the first couple hours I trolled a large herring in a large FBR behind a 4-inch E-chip flasher with a 12 oz. ball on a 2 foot dropper... that rig ended up getting tangled and twisted all to hell (noob manuever, I think)... so I switched to an inline 5 oz. trolling sinker followed by an anchovie on an FBR.

Bottom line, I had one short bite at about 8:00am, and then at about 12:30pm my anchovie got decapated right as I rounded the breakwater heading for the barn.

Jay did a great job of making it look easy... both his fish were caught back-to-back... sorry for the jinx, but it did look to me like you were on the way to limiting out... I have full size pics I can e-mail you (pm me your e-mail address).

Pics 1 & 2:  Dawn Patrol

Pics 3 & 4:  Who da man?  Jay's da man!

Pics 5 & 6:  Jay, I don't know if you signed up for AOTY, but if so, these pics will suffice as proof

No fishing for me today, but I have Tuesday off and I may give it a go at Oyster Point...

Looks like halibut season is really starting to kick into gear.  Glad to see a lot of NCKA'ers score.  The action should only get better.  I have a feeling someone here will catch a 40" or better butt this year if the power boaters don't get to them all first.  Halibut and stripers in the bay are gonna get hammered since there's no salmon season.  We're already seeing more charter boats out there.
