I did a relaxed whitewater run with my fifteen year old son and some friends on Sunday.  We paddled the Outlet Creek to Dos Rios run on mainstem Eel.  The river was pretty low at 400 cfs, and we had a blast.  The kids were using these great whitewater sots made by Dagger.  What a great way to introduce kids to whitewater boating without them having to get a roll down.  When dumping occurred, they just floated to the next pool, retrieved everything and paddled on.  They're not as nimble as regular creek boats, but the kids were stoked.

Anyway, here's the tip:  In the 7 mile run that runs next to the Covelo road, we saw only one fisherman.  As luck would have it, we watched him land a 7-8 lb steelhead.  He told us that was his 5th fish that day and one went to about 10lbs.  He was casting a big red and silver spoon.  Probably wouldn't be good for yak fishing, unless you could stow a rod in a whitewater boat, but the whole reach runs along the road with tons of pull offs.  It's gorgeous there, looks like the Sierras - bouldery and all that.  One fisherman on a Sunday in 8 miles of river, with steelhead running!

Right on, Dave.  Thanks for the intel.  I've rarely been up that stretch of the main fork.

Where's the pics?   :smt002
