I am thinking about planning a camping trip in the fort bragg area this fall with some friends.  Russian gulch looks like it might have nice camping and it looks like there is a parking lot close to the beach.  The cove looks protected as well.  Does anyone have any experience with this spot?  Caspar is kick ass but I would like to stay somewhere with nice campgrounds.  I like Mackerricher but I don't think there is anywhere good to launch close to there.
 Thanks,

That is a nice launch.  Never camped there.  The area that is protected by the cove is small, but it is almost always flat in the cove.  If you look at the contact page on our site the pic is Russian Gulch.

I drove throught the Russian Gulch campsite and it looks pretty nice.  Vault toilets and no showers, though.

Van Damme is another option in area.

I stayed at the RV place in Caspar.  They also have tent sites.  Convenient but not really camping.  Clean and hot showers.

Somehow ethan and I launched an inflatable full of scuba and spearfishing gear from the beach at mackerricker, so I wouldn't rule it out.

That was before my kayaking days, so I didn't have a good guage for how the surf was.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

When I was a kid my brother and I launched a little inflatable raft at mackerricker .  We made it out okay but comin back in we got chopped up bad.  It just seems that whenever I was there that beach was a little rough.
