when fishing for rock fish from the boat, standard issue is a daiwa 17 line counter with 50# spectra on a shimano trevala.  i use 2, 4 or 6 ounce megabaits (or knockoffs) with a very special hook.  that hook is a bronze mustad treble hook in a 1/0 size.  now, the size is very important.  the no. 1 mustad treble will break off if you hook up in the rocks.  yup, the hook itself will break, leaving you with two, then one, then no points at all.  the larger no. 2/0 is so strong that the spectra will break off at the knot.  the no. 1/0 is perfect because it bends out on a rock but not on a fish.  all you need is a pair of pliers to bend the point back and it's done.

remember these guys from last year?  they were the bass guys that i took out to pescadero.  they must have gotten hung up in the rocks a hundred times.  they only lost one jig!  to make removal of the hook a little easier on the fish, you need only pinch down all three barbs.  oh, and there is one more benefit of a big treble hook and spectra.  all of the fish are hooked in the mouth.  you can see that the lingcod is lip hooked.  it's the quick hookset that you get with the spectra that makes sure these fish are not gut hooked.  alan

I went to Mel's today to pickup some RF tackle, and in reading this thread thought I would try out the Siwash hooks replacements.  Only thing is, they only had "open eye" hooks, not closed.  These OK to use as treble replacements? or are they for another purpose?

As I understand it, they are what you want.

Ah, think I get it now, never mind!   Played around with a couple megabaits and split rings...

Open eye = Soild(or split) Ring Replacement (crimp eye closed)
Close eye = Split Ring Replacement

Just had to think about it ;)

Trebles for Rockcods, Cabbies and Lings.  I like putting squid on the treble and it stay on better with a treble.  If the fish get off the one barb then there are the other two to get hooked up, again.

That sounds sweet!  I'm gonna give them a try, which brand do you use?

Braid...you can use 20 to 30 Lbs...But, 50 to 65 is better.  Use like 30 to 40 lbs mono (40 is better)as a Top Shot...Leader...10 ft to 30 ft.  If you direct tie to Braid you get a lot of the hook getting  messed up with the main line.  I used a spider knot on the main line (Braid) and then an uni knot on the mono (leader).

Its the (newb)fever I tells you!  :smt013  I thought it was Mustard, like a color...except it is bronze...  Man... I just have to stop and think some times...  Been rushing like mad to get everything prepped.  Tomorrow will be my 4th visit to the tackle store in two weeks, cause I thought of more stuff I need, and can never find it in one place.

Anyways JM, I'd fish with you any day.  I'm sure something I do will be hilarious!

Ok.... Back to making my new fish smacker...

Well, I have to say, I know how you feel. I am finally feeling somewhat relaxed about a fishing expedition having most basic equipment in hand, or in one of 4 storage crates...
