Survived my Shift...( Man, I'm Glad that one is over!!!! ), had the plan to hit Montezuma on the way

home, read Coastside last night to hear " Not Good " from many. Been Hearing of " Off The Hook "

Sturgeon from Knights Landing to Colusa.

Talked it over with Broadway Bait & Tackle, They suggested Colusa..

 " can u land a Oversized Sturgeon on that Yak?  :smt005 " They Smitten-ed.. :smt012

Also stated bank guys have been getting them from the shore by the I st Bridge.

NO Way I'm spending anymore time in Sac!!!!! Colusa is a little far for a guy who has been beat up for 2

days, Tilsdale is another good choice, but the river is narrow here so it's faster and more remote.

Decided to split the difference and hit Verona's Marina. Picked up some really nice bait @

Broadway, pile and ghost and hit Verona's. $10.00 self pay and I'm glad to see 1/2 dozen boats sitting @

the mouth. I say this because it's nice to see I'm not the only one thinking this is a good spot and...

NO ONE SHOULD ANCHOR FISH ON THE SACRAMENTO ALONE!!!!!!!!!! :smt018 :smt018

 Ask ChuckE :smt006

Reports of lunker Stripers recently with pics at the marina, but no love for me today other than a healthy

 kitty ( released peta Warriors!!! :hippy2: )

I think I shoulda went to Colusa, just a bit of trip for unknown water being a Sleepy Fishy Guy :sleepy3:

Verona's marina is Kool. I can see this place being  good soon as the striper's start to run up the Feather,

but, again, This river is strong and dangerous, took my 10lb danworth to hold in current and wind.

also not a good place to troll, lots of log snags that can come up on you like boilers!!!

I was drifting bait back to the Marina across the mouth and luckily I Threaded a submerged tree!!!

Would have really been trouble with that current and wind. as it was, I was able to cut my line fast and

get clear. Sorry no pics, forgot my Camera packing for work for 2 Days and fishing on the 3rd.

Anybody up for a rd trip to Colusa? ..... :fishing1 ... Danglin

Dude, Danglin you fish there w/ yak!?!? :smt009
My friend, Capt G-brown took Jim (inseine) & I there last Sat on his small boat.  the current was so strong in some spots that Jim was having hard time put the 8 oz weight down on the bottom...  We saw some local made free ramp on the side, but we were telling each other that there is no way we'll fish there w/ yak...  G-brown & I missed a good tap by the Sutter bypass area.  We fished until dark & end up 3 kitties... :smt012  The Verona was so cool tho, we didn't have change for Jim's new car (no license plate yet), so we left some extra money w/ the car description in the envelop & put them into the post.  When we got back they left change in his windshield, how nice is that!!! :smt001  That kinda service makes me wanna go back there again! :smt002

That current is doable, I was able to get my bait down with 3 to 4oz using braid.

the mono I had trouble with. Definetly need the super anchor set up.

I went up to the yuba/Feather mouth last year and worked my A@!@# off!!!

finally anchored up, dropped a cut sardine...Whammo 20lb. Striper!!!!

But that current is intense. Looking back on it all, it's probably a real bad idea to fish these

 powerful rivers in a Yak....

Before my kayak days I used to fish Verona for shad. That was before any kind of marina was there. The outer most of the marina covers a slot where the shad would use to cruise up the river. LOTS of shad were caught in this slot.
As I remember the river is very shallow at Verona. A shallow sandbar goes almost all the way across he river.
I never caught anything of size there, but the closer to shore you fish the better your odds.

That's true Tote,

I marked 4 to 5' from the marina to the mouth, about 1000yds,

As you get past the mouth (North ) quickly goes to 20' almost right up to the East shoreline.

Just looked further into my WON that came today,

That was the Hot spot last week with at least 8 keepers, Oversized and Striper's up to 32lbs :smt104

Nobody was doing Nothin Today, I even think I was the winner with a Kitty :dog:

          " I'll Be Back " :glasses7:

Anybody considering this should really check in with yourself on your limitations and experience..

Every year This River KILLS more people than the all of the Beaches on the west coast...

One Consideration I haven't worked out is what to do if I do hook up with a monster...

If you have to unhook from your anchor  ( Probably going to come loose anyway!!!)

to chase Mr.Dino you have 4 or more problems...

 1. your going to be drifting fast into anchored boats...

 2. Tons of Serious snags

 3. Hard to say how far your going to go down stream

 4. If you are dragging a anchor while Fighting Mr. Dino, Your truly Doomed :smt009

This is a whole new challenge and not to be taken lightly..... just my 2 centavos

Don-
Nice report.  That ripple north of Verona is a bit tricky I've been there with a PB many a time chasing side liners and shad.  Easy to deal with them but getting a dino would be a challenge even with power on a busy day.

Weekdays are tough getting out unless we hit it after 4 and them I'm in.  I've been wanting to hit the water with you so drop me a line.  You know where I'm at.  Thanks.

OB

I dont know jack about the big sacto, but how about a quick release anchor, and a hobie mirage so you can drive and fight fish at the same time?

I suppose another issue could be that by the time you land a big sturgeon, you may be well on your way to the golden gate, and then have to travel back up river against all that current... It is making me tired just thinking about it.
