Its a monster haul, but do yourself a favor and go to Lake Trinity someday... big smallies, not to mention one of the best backdrops anywhere!

They like wood too.
.....huh,huh you said wood. :jerk:

..a very good one too, Mike....i was told by some pb-guy, in the abscents of rocks, if you can find a difference in the bottom,(ie)change in depth, from clay to dirt, gravel to soild bottom AND downed-wood :smt009 could be hanging spots......ITdidMEnoGOODthatDAY.

I knew I could count on you Adam  :smt002

But Adam is right although when on the spawn or feeding they can be in really shallow water, typically you want to fish them a little deeper than LMB and access to deep water is a big plus. Since they like cooler water than LMB they will spawn earlier, and they are very aggressive feeders and will come into the shallows to forage for crawdads or chase bait fish. They hide out really well so if you can see them they are most likely feeding and very aggressive a floating Rapala is the way to go some times they will hit it as soon as it hits the water too much fun. I have had the same fish hit the lure multiple times on the same cast. When they get the mask it's go time. One cool trick I learned is if you hook a small one with a Rapala flip the bail over and let him swim around with it in his mouth, this drives the big ones crazy and I've hooked up to 3 on the same lure.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Look for areas like the other guys have said, and if you can find that sort of structure near an inlet where cold water is coming into the lake it is all the better... smallmouth are so much fun... they have such a pissed off disposition.. more like stripers than LMB..

Ive done well for smaller ones up to 12" in Iselton between Vieras and Isleton boat launch in the rip rap with finesse plastics and small crankbaits. I caught a dozen or so mixed in with largemouth last October. I can't wait to get back there and find some bigger ones.

Friends,

With your help, I landed my first ever Small Mouth Bass this past week.

So thanks to everyone for your advice and suggestions.

I only hope to put more SMB in the boat.

Again, thanks to all who responded.

S.

I'm kind of surprised no one mentioned 1/8-1/4 oz jigs with a 2-2.5 inch tube or curly tail grub. Deadly in rootbeer and pumpkin. Delta riprap and lakes.
Yes on rocks, but also gravel near steeper drop-offs.

Also don't ignore sandy clambeds in the delta, SM LOVE clams.
