Nice!  I may try to sign up for one of those trips myself.

I'm pretty new to diving but I was also thinking of trying to get a small group to go camping/diving at Catalina.  I don't know the area at all, other than having fished at Avalon from the pier though. Gotta start looking for info and saving to buy myself a bigger gun.

Solid gun!

Very retro Rob Allen, I've only seen two of those old-style non-rubberized Simotal(Picasso) handles.  (I have one too)

Equipped with an old school Daryl Wong slotted open muzzle and a Polarsub euro slip-tip.  Don't see those anymore either.   :smt002

Looks like you're ready for some wsb!  Watch out with that particular tip & don't shoot near any rocks.  :smt003

hey fuzz, thanks for the info, can you tell me if this trigger can be used with a standard euroshaft? my riffe euro goes into the handle ok but im afraid to load it up.

i think this gun has gone through some hands that david knows and i just removed the cressi reel. the drag knob was seized. also, do you know how to clean a corroded galv shaft? i have a couple that need attention!

thanks!!

You should be able to use euroshafts in the RA mech with no problem.  The mechanism you have was actually made for RA by Simotal... which happens to be the same as all the Picasso mechanisms.

There's no real way to treat those RA shafts... I've taken the time to de-rust them before with some steel wool, but it just meant that it rusted much quicker and more widespread the next time!   :smt011

It's a trade-off for them being so cheap and strong.  Pretty much you have to try not to scratch the surface too much.  One thing that does seem to work as a rust inhibitor when we do shaft modifications(i.e. notches, pinning, etc.) is "Cold Galvanizing Compound" - available in a spray can.

wow, thanks for the info! i think i'll get a couple of odor shafts as spares as well. i took the sear off and it was way corroded! needed a good polish.

as always, thanks for the good info! you sure know a ton about guns!

No prob.   :smt001

Are you getting the standard pinned shafts from Ray?

Three things that bugs me about his shafts:
  • Doghouse higher than it needs to be.
  • Floppers bigger/higher than they need to be.
  • A friend's order came in with all slightly bent.

Depending on what you're getting, there are other options.  If you want to go the used route, I have a couple 9/32 shafts with slip-tips that I was gonna sell off soon.

Also, it's pretty rare to bend a shaft in Cali, even on wsb/yt.

i was just going to get the RA "original" shafts but if this means the future is going to be rusty and corroded for them i will maybe just go the route of riffe euroshafts. i ordered some 48" shafts from ray and they showed up ok but these were short.

My idea was to use my old home made jbl wood / pipe hybrid and if it fails then use the RA as a backup on the trip. I was going to go the route of just the JBL "thing" but if that thing breaks in half then i'll be unable to spear.

Have you seen the Hammerhead hybrids? Kevin brought one by Wallins a few weeks back and it looks real nice. Looks like a yokooji.

Again, thanks for all the the info!

I think this gun may have belonged to Mario, then got passed to David, then to myself. I have always had good luck with guns i get used from David for some reason.  :smt005

Yup, David is a great guy & an asset to the sport.

BTW John, when I first saw it, I thought it was Mario's old one too... but he said he still has his.  Very similar setup, should serve you well.   :smt001

Hey Fuzz,

in terms of the polarsub slip tip, is it necessary to grind the tip to a rounded shape because the shaft the tip is currently on still has the tricut tip on it.

i was going to grind the tip round and countersink the holes where the line is running through (ex flopper hole). do you think these things may make it better?

Thanks in advance for any info!

John

I believe it was shaped for a conical tip - the main problem being the rust you'll get after rounding the tip.  Does the tip seat well or wiggle quite a bit?

Countersinking is also a pain because of the material the shaft is made of.  Normal 17-4PH steel is like butter compared to this stuff.  Also an important consideration - the flopper hole is already a weak point, I'm not sure you want to be weakening its integrity any further.   :smt002

hey fuzz, the tip i think is ok. its not moving too much but i saw the seat on the slip tip and made the cone shape and it seate better than with the tricut tip. as for contersinking the flopper hole for the slip tip line, im just going to leave it, maybe round the edges a bit to prevent fraying the line.

hope to try it out this weekend in carmel!

thanks for the info though, really helps me decide on what to do!
