John -

I only have up to rig# 3 (#60 mono/#80 spectra) on the RP list which is fine for 3-5 day trips. On the long trips over 5 days, I use the equipment on the boat for heavy trolling and the kite. Can't quite justify the cost of ownership and also, since joining NCKA, I have been obsessed with catching tuna from a yak so I have been spending my limited resources on that mission (mother ships, baja, hawaii). Rigs 1 and 2 are easily the cost of a mothership trip. Can't say I have missed the RP except for the crew. If you go on a long range trip and need some tackle, you can borrow my stuff. probably won't be using it for awhile. :smt006

Shim,  I have seen those lists! I do have a #5 (40lb) and #6 (30lb) rig more or less now, but hope ( :smt005) to stop there!

having more money than time is not something to be proud of...  :smt009 Shopping online is a poor replacement for fishing....

I only got those in a weak purchasing ebay moment while dreaming about the albacore I reeled in on tani's boat. It's not like I need them to pull in a ling or rockfish or even a salmon (if there are ever anymore of those again).

I am not sure what I want to do with my fishing. I'm still pretty happy catching halibut, rockfish, salmon, and freshwater bass and trout. It seems hard enough! Not to mention I got to put my 8 year old and 10 year old on fish more than I have done. Plus I have not been able to travel or even take a vacation for the last 3 years anyways.

If my business lets me travel more in the next couple of years, I'd rather do a combo surf/fish trip to mex and just go out in a panga at the most for dorado or something. for that I don't need more than a 40lb rig anyways.

Scott, sounds like the rancho leonero type trip and the islander trip is the right thing for you? A little kayaking and a little panga fishing maybe? Why don't you like the long range so much? and thanks for the offer on borrowing a rig. I will keep that in mind,  :smt001

Shim, are you going to be doing any more long-range? Do you have all those outfits already?

John I hope to go long range again when my new business is further along and I can hire more help. I would like to take my kid on a father son trip when he's big enough. But Kayak fishing is more mano y mano with its own special appeal, sans crowds. Although I do really miss pushing tackle and rigging to it's physical limits.

After my 1st 4 day trip I was hooked and started rolling my own Grafighters and looking for deals on gold reels. So after a few years I had enough tackle for the long trips. Some is old school now, before spectra you had 80 wide Internationals(hand held tow truck) for cow tuna.
