EK, would you mind posting some pics of your Pac Bay XG70L? I'm curious what your dino tamer looks like.

It's a really light rod actually... don't actually need too beefy of a rod for those dinos... just enough to hang on while they have their way with you.

Is the marbled effect something you did with tint in the flexcoat or is that from your printer?

On the leash loops, I will either clip the leash to the reel or use two zipties, one to make a loop for leash attachment and the other to hold that loop to the rod.  That way if I'm using it somewhere other than the yak I can just cut it off.  I like the idea of drilling out a hole in the trigger & had thought about doing that.  I leaarned the hard way on the Islader trip to leash EVERYTHING.  Nothing like a roll with an audience in calm water to humble ya a bit.  Almost lost the Graphite USA that I made.  Dive master pulled it out of 100+ feet of water.

Looks like I need to take some pics of the ones I've made & post them.  Nice to be able to spend a bit of time in the garage doing something fishing related & come away with a unique new rod.  I have three in the queue right now, but the first is a 10-15# Shikari that I got a great buy on the blank :)

The marblized effect is done by adding pigments to small alloquots of finish, and then blending and swirling with a toothpick to get the desired effect. A top coat of clear finish is required because sometimes the pigment makes the finish tacky.

Easy and fun technique to get a custom look.  I use Tap Plastics gel coat pigments and Testors model paint pigments (pour off the solvent and use only the pigment that settles to the bottom of the bottle).

Hi EK

I would like a quote on a basic Pac Bay XG70L hardware as described but, without flash if it saves money. I like blue double wapped Guides.

Might be fun if you had a Rod class!
                                                          Thanks

Sorry... I'm done taking projects for the season.  I'm booked up until May, at which time we'll be having baby number 2 and then all bets are off.  I may not be taking rod orders for quite some time after that... next fall/winter at the soonest.

Hi EK:

Time to hire a H.S. intern. I guess I'll have to hand wrap
one for myself. Where should I order Blanks Etc... from?
                                                                         Thanks

Hey guys,
Just wanted to give you a heads-up that they have very similar "figure 8 rings" on the small bottles of Purel that you can buy at Camping stores, Longs, Wal-Mart, etc. They're usually in the camping section or near the register. I was thinking about using something like that as a rod leash attachment...and then saw those Scotty ones polepole posted.
Sorry for contributing to the thread-jack of GB2's excellent, information-rich article about Calstars. And Thanks again for the awesome info man!

Mendo,

I have a great source but it is in SoCal so you'd be looking at shipping.  I think there was another thread on wrapping your own.  A bunch of different approaches you can take on setting up to do it.  My first couple I did on the couch with pillows to support the blank.  I've heard of some people using a box notched out.  I made three support jigs out of scrap plywood and lined the parts that come in contact with the rod with the female side of velcro.  KZ, if I remember, uses a power wrapper.  Great way to go but I can't justify the $$.

Wrapping your own stick can be real satisfying, especially that first fish on one you built from a blank.  Patience & attention to detail will be rewarded. Post any questions & you are sure to get answers.

Anyone looking to wrap their own should pay a visit to http://www.rodbuilding.org.  It is the best place to find good information about rodbuilding and find answers to the endless questions that come to mind when first starting out.

Also, there are some very good books and DVD's out now that are an excellent resource.  "Rod-Building Guide" by Tom Kirkman is probably the best book to buy as a resource.

As for DVD's... it's hard to go wrong with anything by Ken Preston or Doc Ski.  Both have introductory level DVD's for sale.  http://www.mudhole.com/Shop-Our-Catalog/Rod-Building-DVDs

I buy components from Mudhole tackle, Angler's Workshop, and Merrick Tackle.  I have wholesale accounts with all of them.  I can sell anything that Merrick Tackle offers and have it drop shipped to your door.  I'd be happy to give quotes on anything in their catalog.  http://www.merricktackle.com
