...from my boss.  Anyone familiar with this gun? Pros and cons? It needs new bands but I'm wondering if it's even worth using. appreciate any advise / thanks.

It's a good brand/model and should be able to take down any of the local gamefish.

You need to switch out the bands, change the shooting line, & add a bungee/clip.  Also make sure the shaft is straight and the barb is tuned properly.   :smt001

In other words, keep it with you & I'll visit at Aquan and take care of it.   :smt005

Sounds like the price is right and it'll add some range to your shots.  When I used to spear fish in SoCal (on scuba) I used a Hawaiian sling for low visibility days and short range shots.  I used the gun when I hid behind rocks/kelp to take longer distance ambush type shots.

My how quickly we change tune......."I'm just gonna snorkel around till I get comfortable.......I'm just gonna use a pole spear so I don't waste time reloading......Anyone know if this is a good gun?"  :smt003

Watch his tune when he crosses over to the dark side of scuba and becomes the ultimate underwater predator.  I have applaud you free divers, you have my utmost respect.  :groupwave

Yeah, I met him a couple times, he probably wouldn't remember. Seemed like a nice enough guy, but this talk about putting a spear gun rack on his new ride has me wondering...next it'll be a set of those big plastic balls hanging from the stern carry handle...it just ain't right.

The way you were talking before you got in the water I figured your first piece of equipment would be a good UW camera...went straight for the kill stick and now the gun.  So much for photography.   :smt003

or if he gets a camera later he'll want it to use it to document his hunting with shots of him swimming up with a shaft going through the ling he just shot: )

Hi Joel:

Nice gun, I shot my first Halibut using a "Healthways" low end
one bander.

First of all, the gun was given to me - I did not buy it. Second, I still think that the pole spear makes more sense at this point of my free diving "career" :smt002 And like what I had mentioned before, the simplicity of the pole spear is what draws me to it. I may even decide to upgrade my pole spear to a longer one....but who knows. I've only "hunted" once and I really enjoyed it :smt007 I'm already looking forward to my next dive/hunt  :smt002

So, no need to fear the mooch....I'm still as gentle as a sleeping tiger :smt003

Was thinking more along the lines of water buffalo... or maybe a hippo.   :smt005
