Waaah! I saw your post too late to get it together! Otherwise, I would have joined you because I would love to have a mentor when I try my hand at perching. Next time?

Hey Janice:

I don't know how much of a mentor I would be, I am not like alex with decades of experience behind me...... But I can give good counsel on having fun going after perch for sure....

It's horrible weather here today, I am going to take a look at the "O" and decide whether or not to do this.

I may wait till the afternoon and try the lower section of SLO for steelhead instead.

I went this morning to do some Perch Grubbin'.  But, I am down in Marina.  Headed to Marina State Beach around 8:30am, High tide was supposed to be around 10:30a, the ocean was super calm with the surf breaking right at my feet/shore.  I recently bought a Shimano Convergence with an Okuma Avenger, which resulted in two BSP's, one was about 6" the other 10", both were released.  Did lose a bigger BSP, the hook didn't want to set, or it just spit it out, but I had it on for a good while before losing it  . Sorry no pics, didn't take my Digital Camera.  I used the sliding sinker (1oz) with bead and barrel swivel, tied to a #4 hook with a 1.5" Gold Flake grub (caught the small BSP with this) and then switched to a 1.5" Perch Power Grub (which landed the bigger BSP).  Both BSP were caught/hooked near the surf break zone, which was no more than 15 ft. away from shore.

How do you guys cast with a sliding sinker?  When I do it, the sinker goes flying, and the hook doesn't follow it.

You must have the hook on the slider? The proper way to rig a sliding sinker is hook at the end of the leader, swivel, bead, egg sinker, main line.

I rig it the way the link shows. When I cast, the sinker goes twice as far as the hook.

Are you using the  little grubs for perch or are you using a big bait like a big chunk of squid? This setup works best when the bait is of a small size and have little wind drag.

The last time I tried it, I was using a jerkbait for halibut. Not really very heavy. The weight would take off and splash about 30 yards out, and the bait would splash about 10 yards out. I eventually gave up and used an in-line torpedo sinker.

Sounds like the jerk bait has too much wind drag. If you put a second swivel above the egg sinker that would solve your problem. I use a similar rig to fish with Stick baits like Senkos.

That's a great idea. The second swivel above the slider will prevent the sinker from sliding backward during the cast. Thanks!

DOH!  You want the sinker to be able to slide up the line.....actually, you want the bait to be able to slide out and away from the sinker, once your cast is completed.

I cn't really understand what you are describing.  Is the line looping out and doubling as you cast?

Sinker/swivel should propel out as a unit.

let's get together for some surfcasting and we  can figure it out....Maybe after this storm *****BRRRRRR****snow on Hwy 17 summit and 40 degrees at the house.

You only need the bait to slide a foot or so.

If you are using real bait (anchovies, squid, etc) then you may need it to be free running. But fishing artificials chances are you'll be holding your pole 100% of the time then you only need it to slide a short distance before you feel the bite and set the hook.

I do recommend that you double up on the line strength on that stretch since it will take some major impact every time you cast.

yeah that makes sense, it's not like live chovies and halibut, where you want them to take a run.  Surfcasting, the weight and grub are floating out there, getting washed around by the currents, and you keep tension on the line which holds the weight to the swivel.

I did use this method: I was using 8# on the main and 15# on the leader.  However, I sometimes don't let my grub "hang out." Meaning I don't leave it out there to get tangled up too much, most of the time I retrieve with three cranks, settle, point the rod down, then lift as I crank, and repeat.  I do vary my retrieve, but I always seem to forget what I did right before I get a hit. (Maybe I am too caught up on the emotion that I got a hit! :smt003) Anyways, Ganoderma I don't know if you have or have not yet read this article http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=10, it helped me out to do better in the Perching dept.
