I decided to try my luck at Blue Lakes (Lake County) today for trout, since I haven't been able to catch one for AOTY this year. I got to the lake at the crack of 10:30 am and paid the $4 to launch my kayak. I also wanted to try out my new fishfinder, since I had to wait so long for it to come in.

I picked up a couple of fish on the finder right off and saw that they were about 18 feet down. I baited up a worm and started to troll around. I ended up with 4 fish, three were 14" and one was 15 1/2". Not quite enough to move up on AOTY, but I'm getting closer.

I got off the lake about 1:30 pm and was ready for the heater. Another good day on the water.

CHEERS!

Looks like the water was flat. That can be an oddity midday at blue lakes. Did you nab your victims around the narrows?
I guess I better check my phone to make sure its working?

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

I launched at the narrows and landed the fish on the HWY 20 side right across the lake. I used 4 lbs test line with a big splitshot to get the half of the worm down kind of deep. I could have kept catching them, but I was there to C&R for AOTY and figured 15 1/2 inch was about as big as the lake was going to give up.

Blue lakes are spring fed natural lakes that were at one time connected to C-lake. The upper blue is cold and clear with steep banks. An excellent rope swing lake. The lower is stained and shallower. DFG dumps rainbows in the upper but both lakes are great bucketmouth haunts. Being a no wake lake this would be a perfect spot for a kayak LM tourney. I know that the bellyboat crowd have events there. Both lakes hold LMs in the 8-10# range. I hooked into my biggest LM to date there but lost it after it jumped and slammed into the side of my yak. Part of me died that day.

Hydro.....dunno if your brain is "hunter-grooved"....but....in your time boating those lakes did you happen to notice trails coming down to the water where large game, like wild hogs, might be using to drink?

Those lakes......are right against the Cow Mountain BLM/wildlife reserve aren't they?

My brain isnt hunter-grooved but I do possess a unique frontal lobe and have been known to bend a few spoons.
There are creatures all over this area but both lakes are surrounded by cabins and there are 3 resorts on the upper lake.  I also wouldnt hunt or prowl around in those hills in fear of reliving the Ned Beatty experience.
Sorry about the threadjack Dan, or maybe deep down Im still bitter about not being invited.
