A couple weeks ago, I ran into Bigeyedave and Dr. Steve at the north end of Salt Point SP and after observing the ocean for a while we decided the entry/exit would be marginal at best and therefore we picked an alternate entry point a bit north which looked calmer.
Geared up and started the hike down. The path to the entry was quite steep and thank goodness it already had three sets of ropes to aid the descent and climb up the hill – something we were not looking forward to.
The water looked good with viz 15-20+ ft. Before long Dave has a big black and so does Steve. Finally I start seeing fish, some blues and couple of small blacks, perch and greenlings.
I see a good size black in a hole, he spooks and exits though the back door.
I go up, catch a few breath and descend towards where I thought the black may be.. not quite, can’t find him but just about when I was to head up I see him behind a boulder to my left, he does not spook so I nail him with my noisy pneumatic. I come up and yell for Dave and show my catch. Dave saw some reds and had one broke off. Filled with anticipation I start looking harder. I see a cab on a small side but definitely legal but I let him be. Then I see a Nice red, he sees me and takes off like a bat outa hell, no shot… arrrgggg! I comb the area for a while but can’t find him, he’s gone. I nail a couple more blacks and a decent blue.
Dave and Steve got some nice stringers and they are heading in. I’m still in diving mode so I stay.
The underwater structure looks great, large boulders and good size holes.
I see a skinny undersize ling and encouraged I keep looking for his Mama with no avail, Then on one of my drops I see another red, he bolts away maybe 10 ft then slams on his breaks and looks back….waackkkkkkk smack him in the head, he’s mine !
I grab some abs and a couple urchins on the way in.
My feet are frozen, and I am not looking forward the hike up the hill. I swear to find an easier entry next time, but deep inside me I know that I’ll return and dive the same spot again !

Locals call that spot "Secrets" its a popular surfing spot as well as one of my favorite ab spots.

Nice stringer you got ther damdan.

I bought a gat-ku pole spear about a month or so ago and haven't had time to shoot anything with it yet.  Hopefully I'll get out into the water next weekend after I have some stitches removed.

Nah, I overestimated my ability to handle a sharp knife (or underestimated my clumsiness).

Love that spot but don't like climbing back up with a load full of abs! How was the kelp down there? I wasn't able to dive this spot this year but some buddies said it was very heavy in kelp just wondering how you thought it was. I will have to get down there next year when the season opens back up. Nice catch

there was not much kelp due to the previous storms, probably even less now.

I need to get out soon Dan.  I haven't been in the water since.  The shrooms are out in full force.  Let's hook up soon.  Call me if you are coming up.
