I saw a report on CNN the other day about a state department advisory for Baja Mex. The Baja Boards say Rapes, Kidnapping, and robberies are sky rocketing this last year due to out of control Meth epidemic. Has anyone been down there in the last six months? I'm gonna be down there the last part of December with a group. I'm driving a trailer from NorCal 1200 miles to LA BAY.

Yep.  Its pretty bad right now.  This has me downright depressed as I was planning on driving down for a few weeks in June, but the bad reports keep coming.  Starting to re-think my summer.

Is this the Pacific side, the Cortez side or the entire peninsula?
Seems to me the Mex gov't needs to step it up a bit the way only the Mex gov't can and nip this prob in the bud unless they want to lose a lot of tourista dollars.
Due to this news I am not in so much of a hurry to get my passport now.

Crime is rampant across all of Mexico but in Particular along the highways of the Pacific Side of Baja and the border towns.

The Mexican Gov't is in Complete denial of it and says the american media is painting a negative image of Baja.

I think Maybe caravans will be the way to go in the future. We should plan an all NCKA trip this summer and take our Baja Back

Is this recent? I went down for 2 weeks last January, and it was one of the safest places I have ever visited. Of course, I didn't hang out in Tijuana, which is a different story.

Hmmm, we might need a very large caravan. One of the reports mentioned a 40-car convoy with 70 armed men. They do seem to be targeting politicians, though. It seems that the cause is the decreased demand for cocaine in the U.S.

It is pretty ironic I haven't gotten mine yet as I am a passport acceptance agent. I personally took about 800 applications over the last year.

If you don't look rich your OK. A ford diesel you look rich!  I have a friend from San Diego was kidnapped and held for 2 months until a 500,000 ransom was paid. The Mex gov was no help at all. Armed caravans just invite long prison terms.  Growing up in San Diego I was always heard the horror stories. Then it was better for awhile . With current status of the world economy and drug situations it doesn't look good.

I am having trouble going east of hwy 101 and south of SF these days.lol

In my opinion  Long range mothership trips or So. America is the ticket for now. I have also been looking at the Florida Keys. Hemingway couldn't have been all wrong.

Hemmingway is cool but Steinbeck inspired most of My Sea of Cortez fantasies.

I've honestly never had anything but easy going times in Baja. I travel solo with my third world trailer and go mud bogging before crossing the border. My other trick is to blast Mariachi music while prominently displaying the mexican flag alongside old Glory.

If that doesn't work and it looks like I'm gonna get hustled. I practice lead pipe diplomacy. Firearms are outlawed for Gringos only Criminals have them and by that I mean the Cops. I keep two lead pipes under the seat one is a foot long the other 3 ft. If harrased I immediately hurl the shorter pipe at the lead thug's noggin and in the confusion go Luke Skywalker on the rest of them with a longer pipe. The trouble begins when you miss the first pipe and get the second snatched from ya.
