I try to drift over 50 - 60 ft of water and work my spoon in the 10 - 35ft range. The fish are typically scattered so finding a school would be rare. A good fish finder will help determine the depth to work your spoon. I My preference is for small hopkins or crippled herring. They seem to have the best action for trout spooning.

Brian -

that is a great tip! Thanks!  :smt003 BTW, thanks for organizing and if things go well we should have a macinaw tournament :smt002 , or at least hook up for a mac hunt.

Update on the fishing reports:

http://www.fishsniffer.com/cgi-bin/forumsyabb/YaBB.pl?num=1196196148/15

I was hoping to get up to the lake this weekend but I am under doctors orders to take it easy and not drive if at all possible.

A friend did put his boat in the water yesterday and reported there is still a solid thermocline in most parts of the lake. You should plan on having some trolling weights to fish down 15 - 30ft. I'll keep everyone updated as I get more information.

Thanks for the report Brian, it was an enlightening read.

Looks like I might be able to make it after all.  Would I be completely nuts if I were to wear a wetsuit?  It gets pretty damn cold up there and if the water has actually turned over, it could get pretty uncomfortable real quick.  Any thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,

Michael

Brian G.,

Where will we find you for check in, and where is the official weigh in station?  Has it been decided if it is going to be single heavy trout or single and heavy stringer?

Entry Fee: $10.00 heavy trout pot and an optional $5.00 heavy trout stringer pot ( optional )

I will be at the Glory Hole Launch Ramp for both check in and weigh in. Look for the red Nissan Frontier with NCKA stickers and racks.

What are the possibilities of paying ahead of time so that we can bypass check in and launch upriver?  Maybe verbally check in over radio?

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

My plans to pre fish the lake this weekend didn't work out, all packed and ready to go last night. But when I stopped to gas up, I saw water leaking from the Explorer   :smt011. Thinking it was the water pump took it apart today and saw water coming from the side of the block, not the water pump...  :smt013.

Still planning to make it next weekend..

Uh oh!  What year?  I have a 2000 Explorer.

On a different note, if my buddy doesn't join me next weekend, I may be able to pick you up on my way to Melones.  I will be crashing at my mom's house Friday night in Modesto.  Will keep you posted.

As the Steelhead clinic got postponed for lack of rain, I think I will try to make it to Melones to explore a new fishing site.
