I'll be going next week and I wont be there through September. I was wondering what you could tell me about Kayak fishing the mouth of the Rogue or other rivers in the area. Last year when I went there were alot of Salmon fisherman all piled up at the mouth of the Rogue. I dont know if it would be dangerous to get in the middle of that kind of traffic, knowing how inconsiderate some people can be with fast boats, at least they are on the Colorado.

I've never fished a kayak in those river mouths, just trolled in a little boat.

The boaters up there are like all boaters, some good, some bad. I'd fish a kayak there, but I wear a wetsuit and keep all my gear tied or stowed. Even then it would take a lot more than a  boat wake to tip me.

An option is to fish the south side of the jetty near the mouth, that's were the most salmon hang out anyway. Some of the jetty's are accessable from the beach on the south side.

I think Ill give it a shot. I'm not worried about being tipped as much as actually being hit. Around here with all of the jet boats and skis, its a real possibility I have a wet suit as well so I'll give it a shot. My family loves Salmon and I make killer Gravlox. I stayed a ways down the beach by the high school and stables last time I was in town. I know that section of the beach was very rough, I was surf casting there for Perch, without much success as I recall. I'm speaking of Gold Beach.

Well, one thing about the boats at the mouth of the Rogue is they are all fishing. So a lot of them are trolling and the other boats are going in and out of the mouth. I'd keep my eyes on the in and out traffic and be most alert when crossing broadside to the mouth, in essence crossing a shipping lane.
Also stay on the right side of the  channel going in and out.

Basilkies, Just two days to go of this heat here and I'm on my way.  I was told by one of the state employed biologists in the area to stop by one of the parks in the area to check out the counts on the half pounder Steelheads, I understand it is the beggining of that season. I think I will do that as well. It will give me a chance to get out the old fly rod. I would really like to catch a Salmon, so I will get out there and keep my eyes on the boats. Is there anything that I should know in terms of safety having to do with currents? That has been my main concern since I will be solo. I have spent quite a bit of time on a river that has good strong currents in parts, but this is entirely different then dealing with marine currents, mainly because of the possibility of ending up in Japan if I do something stupid.
