I've only ever caught dinky gopher rockfish, and I got this one today (well, at least I think it's a gopher). I know it's hard to get a sense of size from the picture, but it's huge compared to any that I've caught. I do have some video, and that shows the size more clearly.

Anyways, just curious as what size you consider to be BIG for a gopher.

I would label that a grass rockfish.

Big gopher, maybe 14 inches.

+1

Gopher's going to have pinkish/flesh colored blotches that match the shit it takes on you.  Not kidding.   :smt001

I'm not sure what that is, but the gophers I usually get resemble Coppers, but with a much shallower dorsal fin, no yellow rays, and brown w/pink blotches instead of light brown with light grey blotches

I'd agree with the Grassy ID.  They can get pretty big.

According to this link about grass rodkfish

https://www.pierfishing.com/grass-rockfish/

Italian fishermen of the 19th century considered this to be the best tasting of all the rockfish and apparently that opinion is still held by many. At $4.85 per pound, grass rockfish received the highest prices paid to California commercial fishermen for rockfish in 1998.

They are quite tasty and the texture of the firm, large flakes of meat is similar to Vermillion Rockfish, for sure one of my favorite.
