If it makes you feel any better while you're waiting on one, I strongly believe that this won't help you with the ones that will torpedo you from the depths. Seem to work on the ones curiously snooping around the surface though, but those aren't the ones you're concerned about.

Thanks fellas .  No recent encounters thankfully.   I realize shark shield won’t make me bulletproof. Just looking to reduce chances and keep the snoopers away.

No guarantees for sure yet AI for the win?

Here are the key takeaways regarding the effectiveness of Shark Shield against a "Polaris" (presumably a misinterpretation of a 'White' shark, or a "Polaris" submarine-style attack) strike:
Significant Risk Reduction: Scientific tests have shown that Shark Shield (e.g., Freedom7) can reduce the risk of a white shark biting a person by 54–69%, and one study found an 89% deterrence rate against white sharks, which often attack from below, similar to a surprise "Polaris" strike.

Phew...insurance is knowing where your going if it's "your turn". Still yet I pray to nevah evah get bumped, experience the awe, or any other escapable victory with these, beyond toothy, apex predators...

The studies are easy to find online, and the SS results are indeed impressive. As far as I know, none of the other supposed deterrent things have any such evidence that they are of any use at all.

The theory is that a shark spends some time scouting out a potential target before a Polaris attack, and it’s during that time that the SS has its deterrent effect.

Ahhh…I am refreshed and motivated for a 3 mi. offshore experience…Earnest set me up to run my SS on an exterior battery and my poor yet functioning soldering skills are a green light!  I’ll still say see ya’ on da wattah’ at the appointed time…

Having been on the receiving end of a Polaris type attack last August at Hmb (that is the ONLY way they attack), I will never be on the ocean again without my Shark shield which I did not own at that time.  I did see another one come up for sale on FB Marketplace about a month ago. Check ebay too.

In case anybody is interested, this is the research paper that I mentioned above:

https://www.academia.edu/5547839/Effects_of_an_electric_field_on_white_sharks_in_situ_testing_of_an_electric_deterrent

Table 4 is the key finding for kayakers, as the "dynamic decoy" is similar to a kayak on the water. In that table, the give the results of experiments where the setup was identical, but in one case the SS was turned off, and in the other it was turned on. With the SS off, they had 16 breaches and 27 surface interactions, whereas with the SS on (for an equivalent number of tests), they had 0 breaches and 2 surface interactions. The "Discussion" section, which begins just above Table 4, provides some context and, in particular, provides plausible reasons for why the SS seems to be so effective at preventing breaching/Polaris types of attacks.

Too bad that SS is no longer available new. Supposedly the IP has been purchased and the new owner is planning to start selling them again, but that's been the story for a couple of years...

Haven’t Ben on in quite a while, but if you are interested, I have a S.S. available.
I’m up in Medford Oregon now, so delivery may also be an issue.
If interested, shoot me a pm and we can figure it out.

What ever you do, don’t send it to SharkShield for repair cause they went belly up several years ago and I never got my unit back after I sent it in for repair. If anybody knows different, I would love to hear it.
