Bolinas 9 a.m. launch

It was a fabulously beautiful day out there.

The major swell was from the NW at about 5-feet.
A minor 1.5-foot swell was coming straight up the coast from Monterey.

The water, while not smooth, had that unique formation to it that I call oil-can water.   The waves and humps were all rounded....with absolutely nothing breaking.....It was like.....I was like as if.......Maybe like as if.....you filled your clothes-washer with a good quality of 10-30, yu'know, and then set the dial on "gentle" to light 'swish'.     That's how it was out there, folks.

There were at least 50 boats......I counted 48, and I would be the 49th......and then during the day I kept seeing boats that I was pretty sure weren't in my original count.    Most of 'em were hanging right on the buoy.

The buoy was inhabited by a sea-lion.....I took his picture.....

What will not be included in this report is my recording (my new Pentax digi camera has a "sound record" feature that makes it double for a tape recorder) but the out-put-file is a .wav ------and I don't know how to make the conversion from .wav to the sound format this website accepts.    But .....it's a TOTALLY NEAT recording of the buoy whistling and groaning...my wife said of it:   You brought me THAT instead of a FISH...???...!!!....

I did hook a salmon, well I never saw it, but I think it was a salmon, and it got off.
I was fishing with 7-inch herring------large bait, but the intent was to keep the illegal ground-fish from biting.

Anyway, I had a good time.......I forgot to bring water with me and practically perished from parchment.   In fact my need for water is what drove me off the ocean and back to Bolinas.

thanks for the report judd. sounds like nice day on the water. did you see any other yaks out there? or hear about any fish being landed?

No, I didn't see any catches.
Guys were fishing deep.....rods were bent double.
No yaks but me.

It's an odd spot, out there....I mean, that the salmon would choose that area to scoool year after year.    It's never been my favorite, but for "nearby" it's the only game in town.

Muir Beach used to be a pretty good launch.....a long carry, but it gave good access to that rocky south-coast.    Then the park guys put up a gate locking the parking lot at night, and never got around to opening until about 9 a.m.....and then they barred direct parking-lot-to-beach access (on environmental grounds) and created a board-walk route that's an even longer portage.   I stopped going there....but I miss it.    Rodeo Beach is the alternate launch now.   

You'd THINK that a great salmon-spot would be to hang out right off the Bonita Point Lighthouse, you know, to catch the salmon as they come around that corner and head up into the bay & rivers.   But no, nobody fishes salmon there.    Is it that the water coming out of the bay smells so bad to them that they adopt "holding areas" in locations (like off Bolinas) where somehow current pattens protect them from bay outflow?

I have this mental image of a salmon holding-its-breath until it reaches Port Chicago.

Nice job getting out there...

 Really want to make the show, but had to be on deck with the fellas, I did take a run out to Richmond

 ( I had to do some fishing, I would have gone Nuts otherwise thinking about DUX  )

 Glad I did, I got into a small Halibut bite, really fun, great water, staying local ...

 strange thing was There were lots of PB's in the area complaining about how the Water was to rough

 to make it to Dux...?
