NCKA's owner is Allen/Polepole but he's busy traveling right now.

That's a nice vacation....

I went down the rabbit hole for clay pots.

I use a Donabe made for cooking rice when I pull out the bag of sushi rice.  it is a tastable difference.

Same.

The # of guests (bots) are slightly down....  under 600 today instead of the 900-1000+ we've seen over the past weeks.

Crawling activity probably fluctuates normally as one set of bots finishes crawling all current content, then come back later or a new set of bots comes along to saturate things again.

Maybe the bots got tired of all of the Internal Sever Errors...

So are the powers that be  actually aware of the problem?

So are the powers that be  actually aware of the problem?

Maybe some of the old-timers here can chime in with what they know?

I've "only" been posting here for 5 years, so don't have a handle on history.

From doing a search on "admin" - I only see 3 main admins who have been very active in the past, polepole, bushy and alshobieoutback

Of those, I remember periods when none had logged in for over a month...  even now als looks like he's not been on since Oct 2025. (bummer because i really thought he was such a friendly/great welcomer back when i first joined)

I don't track super closely but I know bushy and polepole still log in on occasion but it seems pretty infrequent.

But I'm not even sure if polepole is one of the main "technical" admins of the board.

I say that because, from what I can tell, NCKA and NWKA are basically sister boards. They look the same, seem to have the same backend. Probably sit on the same physical (or virtual) server. And while I'm unable to register on NWKA (registration seems broken/painful/impossible) from what I've seen there, some people have posted that only two people have real technical access to the backend stuff (required for updating/fixing AOTY mechanism).

Other mods/admins there have wanted to get more access to fix things but could not (again, just going by memory of what I read there, don't quote me on this).

It really sounds like the main people running the boards are at least semi-inactive (which is kindof understandable tbh...  I've done this sort of things for years and it's actual work to keep up with maintenance and such, and the longer you let it go the bigger of a pain in the ass it is to kindof bring it back up to modern standards). It's pretty thankless work.

Aside from the obvious (bots causing the errors), just the fact that the board software is running on a 9-ish year old version is pretty concerning as well.   :/

Depending on amount of customization of the board, that could be a pretty touchy upgrade from 2.0.14 to the current version (2.1.7 i think?)

And that's just the board upgrade...  chances are if SMF hasn't been touched in years, then most bits underneath are pretty stale too... the operating system, the PHP system and database, etc. That is a LOT of work to modernize all that if it's really gone idle all that time.

Cleanest way would almost certainly be to build a new server/board and do some interim steps to copy data over and incrementally upgrade parts of the stack to get to modern day. But yeah that's not some pushbutton or single-script task.

To fix the bots themselves is more of a cloudflare reconfiguration thing (so much easier in theory, if i'm correct and they already have CF in place and someone has the actual login credentials and ability to change things). But again, no idea who has that ability these days.

p.s. this is also why when I created westcoastkayakfishing I am only commiting to running it for a decade at first, it's real work and takes some commitment. ideally i'd run it even longer than that but i'd not commit to it unless i had an actual line of succession, someone technical enough to take over and a plan to hand it over in case i get hit by a bus or whatever

Right on.
Thank you for that.
I know once you quit showing up daily it doesn't take much to mess things up.
Seems the open forums are subject to way more Hal 9000 hijinks...
It's a tought job.
Especially when the admins/mods  can't  act...

It’s night and day different here since Covid. It’s really sad to see. Maybe some young blood will step up and start leading some new tournaments. PolePole is the owner as far as I know. In the past I’ve heard he travels overseas for his job so he might not be able to devote the time the site needs right now. I hope this isn’t the beginning of the end for NCKA.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
