a striking aspect of ur vid is how much conditions changed throughout the day.  it looked really flat throughout but the wind sun n cloud cover seemed dramatically different with time

Wow that's a nice catch. Sand dabs were my father's favorite fish to order in restaurants. Tasty flesh that easily comes off of the large bones.

Babies, compared to your halibut.

165ft of water.  I had to fix my mistake on the video and repost several times.   I was rushing it too much.

The weather was constantly changing, and whales were moving around me.

My wife and I enjoy eating them.

I've always wanted to figure out how to catch non-halibut, non-sand dab flatfish consistently, but so far no luck. This video has inspired me to try again!

I am still trying to learn how to catch and where to catch.

Thanks for sharing Paul. Looks fun.

Keep us posted as you figure it out.

I mostly fish in Santa Cruz, and I know where to find sand dabs, and I assume the other non-halibut flatfish should be nearby, but I only ever catch them sporadically--never with any consistency.

Nice catches!
I love all flat fishes including dabs and soles. They're simply great.

How far do I have to go out from Santa Cruz area to catch dabs/soles?

If you stay to the east side of the mile buoy, out in about 110 fow is where they usually start to show up, with 120 fow being even better. For some reason further west at that same depth seems to be pretty much barren. That's far out (man), like maybe 3.5 to 4 miles from the boat ramp in the harbor...
