Does anybody save their crab shells to make fertilizer and add to their garden? I decided to give that a try because I’ve been bringing home crabs lately. I saved about half a bucket of crab shells then used a 5 gallon bucket, and 4 x 4 as a pestle and mortar and smashed the shells to pretty small pieces. I already compost with worms so I have a blender I use to purée food scraps to feed my worms. I used the blender to finely chop the shells. I added the shell pieces to my worm compost bin so they can continue to slowly break down and leach nutrients into the soil. It wasn’t too much work considering I’m not gonna do it every time I go crabbing. It’s easy enough to save the shelves in a 5 gallon bucket outside and do it every once in a while. It’s kind of nice knowing I used 100% of the crabs I harvested and it’s also going to benefit my garden.

I use to just throw broken shells at the bottom of my plant holes. I think it helps the plants.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

I just dig the shells into the ground, around trees or vegetable beds, and cover them with plywood to deter animals from digging them out.... Plywood does not seem to be bearproof, but good enough for fox raccoons and skunks.
I see you smash the rock crab body,  save that, it has more meat than the claws do.

same. I just put the crab debris into a bed and cover it up. so far no issues with trash pands or anyhting.
we still find the occasional dungie shell fragment when turning the soil over in the spring. my wife cracks up and our dog is always super interested.
