My Lowrance Hook 5 shuts off after 4 minutes and 10 seconds. I’ve tried two different batteries and two different power cable/transducer sets. Grok says it’s likely a problem on the circuit board and I need to replace it. The Garmin costs more than another Lowrance. The Lowrance Discover mapping doesn’t look good looking at the online sample and I’m used to the Navionics detail. Does anyone know of any other reasons to choose Garmin or Lowrance in the 5 inch size?

have an Echomap 94sv in the boat.   I like it.  But, the 4 means is saltwater mapped.   93 is 9” and freshwater.   To get both maps, is an extra $200.  So put that in your pricing.

Yes, buy the fresh water built in because it’s cheaper and the upgrade map costs the same no matter which unit you start with.

I like my Garmin 43 dv with mapping. It’s discontinued, but you may be able to find it on FBM, Craigslist, or from a retailer that still has inventory.

Great compact size, good mapping, and it’s holding up nicely after 1.5 seasons. I switched over from Lowrance and will hopefully never go back, I’m liking Garmin’s product much better
With gratitude and humility

What mapping are you using? How is the screen visibility with polarized sunglasses on?

I use the coastal mapping that came with the units (I actually got two I liked it so much). I don't wear sunglasses often so I cant give any feedback on the screen/glare.

What problem did yours have? Did you have to ask for out of warranty service or what to get them to offer the upgrade?

It was around 6 months out of warranty. We did some trouble shooting and they offered it. It wasn’t turning on we tried replacing cables and it didn’t work. The push in connectors were really bad. If they don’t offer it to you after trouble shooting just ask if you can upgrade to something different or you will try garmin out. Worth a shot

It’s about 8 years out of warranty but nothing ventured nothing gained.
