Hi everyone!

After many years of high intensity bass fishing in kayak tournaments around the Midwest, I moved out to California and traded my tournament boat for a sea kayak for paddling and exploring the coast. Finally I got tired of just watching all the fisherman out of HMB and lately I've been playing around with setting up my sea kayak for fishing to mixed levels of success. Looking forward to meeting some of y'all out on the water!

Welcome.

Whereabouts in the Midwest? I’m originally from Iowa.

I went to college in Indiana, and fished on my collegiate bass team. I mostly fished the Indiana Kayak Anglers series, with the occasional tournament in Ohio, Kentucky or Michigan. Always a couple events a year on Kentucky Lake, and St. Clair was super fun. There was a college event in Prairie du Chien on the Mississippi, but I don't remember if we actually ended up over on the Iowa side at all.

Very different world from the ocean fishing here! I think this past weekend was the first time I've caught a fish from deeper than 30 or 40 ft of water.

That’s for sure. I mostly fished small farm ponds, with the occasional trip to a big lake in Minnesota or one of the huge reservoirs on the Missouri River in South Dakota…

Nothing beats the big blue!

One noteworthy difference vs bass fishing is the swing-for-the-fences hook setting for bass.

Definitely a believer in giving ocean fish a chance, smoothly loading up/taking out any slack, and then hitting ‘em with more of “a reckoning,” as another angler described it once on this site. Plus I solidly hook about half the halibut I get with the rod just sitting ungrasped in a rear rod holder.

Have fun and stay safe out there!

welcome!!

while I didnt bass tournament at all, I was (am?) an avid basserman.    with the storm poo-pooing my rookie ocean status, I am trying out a brand new bass lake Saturday.  I'm gonna burn some gas getting there, but there is nothing funner than trying out a new mystery lake.

the ocean has that first kiss vibe to it for me as well.
