not much of a fishing store, but it is nice to have arroud for things.  like last minute, "thought I still had hooks"..or "did someone eat my frozen squid"..emergencies.

I went in for some squid.  it's close and easy.   I took the 2 of 3 boxes left, and noted to the clerk he was out.  he told me they are not ordering anymore. they were just alerted this morning the store is going bye-bye next month.

inventory is done...no sinkers, or hooks.  so not worth hitting up the sale.

bummer.  the people were hecka nice...hope they land on their feet.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Each time I go into any of them it's always less than 10 people shopping.

The one in Santa Cruz never has anything useful in stock.  On one visit in May, I asked when they were going to restock some split rings and the manager said "by the end of the year."  I've never had that problem at Bayside.

When I was at West Marine San Carlos last week, there was box full of Pitbull Tackle swimbaits.
I asked how much a piece costs, and the sales guy said it's free and I can take all I want.  So I took a dozen pieces home.  The other merchandise were not discounted and were being moved to their Alameda and Santa Cruz stores.

I am in Marin and we have a West Marine in Sausalito and they are pretty well stocked but quite honestly I make the trek to Outdoor Pro Shop in Cotati for most my needs. They are great, much better than WM. Maybe a little bit of a drive from Santa Rosa but worth it. I once brought in a rod (bought from West Marine, they would not help with sending it to the factory)in that had broken  tip and they got me credit at their store worth 200 USD and the rod I bought  at west marine only cost 75 USD, so I always make the trek up there. Really nice staff, great store support these guys, Ron.

Outdoor Pro is gone.

Well, to be fair, they are not primarily a fishing store. For sailing-boating-safety-etc. related things, the Santa Cruz store is generally reasonably well stocked (although somewhat less-so recently, which makes me wonder if the whole company might be going into shutdown mode). In any case, they are not cheap, so I usually only go there for semi-urgent things.

North Bay Foshing Tackle is a great new store in Rohnert Park, started by a good guy who was at OPS. Knowledgeable staff and some really quality items on the shelves. Definitely check them out. Bummer about West Marine. They are pricey, but I like a lot of their merchandise.

I get that and I do calibrate my expectations with that in mind.  But, why do they stock size 9 million split rings?  Oh, because nobody buys them.  The ones people buy... they don't restock but twice a year.  I think it's probably good business to stock things that sell.

The store in Antioch had shopping carts filled with sale items last summer - pretty much all labelled at $2 or $3 each.  Grabbed up a bunch of hooks, some striper lures, some big jigheads, and a bunch of other random stuff.  Seemed like most of it was sold at 1/3 of retail.
