They should be held accountable for this mismanagement. This is a major fuckup.

I'm not sure about that. The way I read it, they have new/better data that they are acting on.

This is a good example of garbage in and garbage out.
I have been very impressed with the CDFW staff and the Fish and Game Commission.  I think they have many dedicated people working.  The rockfish regulation is, in my opinion, very complicated due to the Federal and State overlapping issues.  I am glad that they decided to take an emergency reopening to make this effective this season.  I have been communicating with both CDFW and F&G Commission staff for over a year, and they have been very helpful and responsive.

I'm not sure about that. The way I read it, they have new/better data that they are acting on.

They determined that the previous stock assessment relied on “limited data sources and data used from other states as proxy”.  And that new stock assessment was requested “that relied less on those uncertainties.”  These are quotes from Susan Ashcroft from the video  Yes, they have better data now, but the previous data was shit.  The CDFW press release spins it as “ Commission Increases Fishing Opportunities for the 2025 Recreational Groundfish Season”.  They messed it up to begin with then want a pat of the back for fixing their mess.

Isn't it a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation with the bad data?  They knew it was low-quality data, but it was the best they had, right?  So, if they decided to not do an emergency closure and the new data came in and said the quillback were even worse off, wouldn't people be pointing fingers saying they're ignoring the data in front of them?

What would accountability for this supposed mismanagement look like?  Is this a "major fuckup" or is this simply adapting the management measures based on good data.  When I first read the proposal, my initial reaction was that they are doing exactly what we all asked for -- get new and better data and make a better decision from it.  Am I totally off the mark on that?

They did exactly what we asked, and I am very happy that they did an emergency reopening, instead of a normal regulation change.

“….instead of a normal regulation change.”

Exactly, instead of waiting until next year, this is far preferable. It doesn’t change the use of faulty data to begin with, but is in the right direction.

Believe me, I’m the first that wants the data and decisions to be science based and correct.  But if it isn’t, why should we accept it after the fact?  If this sort of decision making happened in the private sector, someone or someones would be losing their job.

Best scientific information available still needs to be valid scientific information.  In this case, this didn’t appear to happen, from what I’ve seen.  There needs to be accountability to preserve the integrity of the system.
