Dying hurts.  Ikejime is the best method to both preserve meat and to limit the suffering.  The work of Temple Grandin on animal slaughter methods and the effect on the quality of meat translates well to fish.  Unstressed animals taste better.  Limit their suffering as much as possible.

A great philosopher once said that it’s OK to eat fish because they don’t have any feelings.

Having a good bonker and using quickly on any fish that are coming home is just good manners. Here’s my homemade one from a piece of extra dowel. Carved a bit of a handle and drilled a hole in the end that got filled up with lead split shot and epoxy. Then it got used as a paint stirrers several times for a thick coating. Works nicely.

Brain swizzle and cutting chin arteries to bleed them makes for better taste and ya, we all know fish feel pain. Still gotta eat though :smt002
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Da spike, wiyah, bleed way to go…takes practice but it very satisfying.

I’ve been using American stainless fishing wire.  I forget the lb. and it does kink if you allow it otherwise it’s plenty cheap….if I ever catch another fish…with dis weather.   :smt006

In the past I've told myself that cutting gills causes a rapid decline in blood pressure, which in turn causes them to quickly pass out...... but as I type that out it kinda sounds like hooey.

Does the heart reliably continue to beat in the minutes after ike jime/brain spiking? Guess if not I could invest in some pressure bleeding equipment. Hate to cause unnecessary pain to any being but especially critters.

If they suffered intense pain via getting hooked in the jaw, they would not fight so hard. Sometimes when I hook a lingcod deep, they come in pretty easy, so maybe there is more pain deeper in the throat.
To me cutting the gills and bleeding them out probably reduces some pain. I believe bleeding out and losing consciousness is a relatively painless way to die - better than drowning or suffocating, I imagine.

why do u carry a bonker? don’t want to be rude but imo it’s worse than a brain spike in every way, is there some advantage to it

It’s pretty standard equipment and very effective, bro. Maybe I’m just inferior to spike-users in every way.

As a chef, I spike the brain as quickly as possible—not just to end the suffering humanely, but because it keeps the meat cleaner and less fishy. The twitching stops in under 10 seconds.

I think the bonker and the brain spike (if used correctly) are effectively achieving the same thing. The intent is to dispatch the fish by disrupting brain activity.  I usually just use my bait knife to stab the brain and cut the throat and gills.
